The quick route

B Magazine, Richard Mcleish, Published on 30/09/2012

» Routers have traditionally been blue-collar gadgets. Although many homes have one, the majority of users do little more than reset it infrequently to refresh their internet connection. B Magazine, Richard Mcleish, Published on 26/08/2012

» Samsung made a bold move late last year (legal issues with Apple aside) by announcing a return of the stylus for its big-screen Galaxy Note smartphone. B Magazine, Richard Mcleish, Published on 22/07/2012

But the ultraportable market isn't the open road that it was 12 months ago, with Apple recently upping the ante with its MacBook Air upgrades. So has HP balanced form and functionality? Terminal or Everlasting?

B Magazine, Richard Mcleish, Published on 18/12/2011

» It's hard to believe, but my tech friends have declared HP's prognosis terminal. But while the other sectors of the multinational diverge, the company's PC manufacturing arm seems to be ticking over. HP continues with its Pavilion notebooks, the middle-class compatriot of the snazzy Envy range, with a new series of PCs. The specifications look impressive on paper, but do they deliver anything new to the series that is starting to become a little long in the tooth? Let's see if HP's persistence with the Pavilion series can increase the manufacturer's longevity.

Mid-Range maidens

B Magazine, Richard Mcleish, Published on 11/09/2011

» Last month, Nokia wedged a claim in the low- and mid-range smartphone markets with three new releases _ the 600, 700 and 701 _ proving the Finns aren't quite finished yet. The company's pitch is spearheaded by the new Symbian OS on board, named Belle. It's surprising since the company recently made a deal with Microsoft for its mobile OS. Nokia is also equipping its new phones with an NFC (near field communication) chip that can be used for payments. So why is the manufacturer continuing with its Symbian OS that has come to be deplored by many users? And will the on-board NFC chips help it return to its former glory? Let's peek at the new models to find out.

Pocket projections

B Magazine, Richard Mcleish, Published on 28/08/2011

» Most smartphones these days capture decent quality videos and pictures, but our ability to present that media is still limited. One solution to this problem are pico projectors, and since 2009, many manufacturers have tried their hands in the pico projector market _ Samsung, LG, Acer, Apicer, BenQ, among others. And why not, as the gadget is appealing with its pocketable dimensions, instant usability, and gimmick factor. But nobody seems to have been able to recreate in a pico the slick performance that new full-sized projectors now provide.
