Return of the Harman Kardon Esquire mini speaker

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 24/12/2014

» A couple of years after the appearance of the original "Bondi Blue" iMac, the interesting Harman Kardon Sound Sticks appeared. With modifications, these are still available and I actually think they look as good now, as they ever did back then.

More money, Mac problems

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 17/12/2014

» Macs sometimes go wrong. Many problems may be software-related, but I have had hardware let me down too. My 12-inch PowerBook needed battery replacement under an Apple programme, and a later MacBook Pro ate a battery every year. Two computers had hard disk failures: a 15-inch MacBook Pro under warranty, and my iMac after five years of use. With backups, I lost no data.

Comparing the iPod Touch and Nano

Database, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 08/12/2010

» I have had two iPods on test recently: the iPod Touch and the Nano. Both have had considerable design changes inside and out. The ladies in the Siam Towers office who gave me these devices initially wanted me to have two iPod Touch units: Apple was keen to have me try out FaceTime and, although this was unsuccessful in Singapore due to problems with Wi-Fi access, we tested successfully in Thailand before and after.

Out of town with Apple devices and software

Database, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 01/12/2010

» I am just recovering from a busy week in Singapore, where the university I work for was co-organising a conference. I volunteered - that was the word my boss used - to help: sending out information with blogs, Twitter and, most importantly, a daily newsletter. I used Pages for the newsletter, which gave me much flexibility in terms of layout, particularly when I was told to cut, add or edit items. I expect to write more on Pages in the new year as an update to the iLife suite is expected, perhaps when Apple's online Mac store opens.

Using iPhoto in iLife 11

Database, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 17/11/2010

» As soon as I had installed iLife '11, I downloaded the 9.0.1 update and ran that before opening iPhoto. During the week, another update to iPhoto was released, bringing it to version 9.1 and returning Calendars to the "Create" selections. No-one is saying why this was missing in the initial release of iLife. I am writing this based on the latest update (9.1) (www.apple.com/ilife/iphoto).

iPhone 4: A Surprise Purchase

Database, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 06/10/2010

» I did not think I would be writing this column as, despite registering early with Dtac and already having my name on a True iPhone, I was not invited to any events; nor was I surprised by a smiling delivery-man with a shiny new iPhone 4. Speculation on Twitter and Facebook (how we rely on these nowadays) suggested that 18,000 of the devices went to Dtac, 43,000 to True and 20,000 to another carrier. These figures are unsubstantiated; but whatever the real figure, I confirm I did not get one in the release euphoria.

Latest Mac mini packs more power

Database, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 04/08/2010

» As soon as the Mac mini was released back in 2007, I wanted to get my hands on one. In the end I had three. They were billed as the basic Mac and users were able to use the same mouse and USB keyboard they had for a PC.

Apple's unreasonableness keeps it competitive

Database, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 30/06/2010

» A week after the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), Apple moved on. Safari 5 was out, the iPhone 4 was coming and iOS4 was announced for June 21. Analysts pored over the information - some second-hand and incomplete - the pundits predicted the end of the Mac, while the rest of us sat back to wait for what came next. We did not wait long.

iPad: Early impressions and commentary

Database, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 10/02/2010

» In some ways I was disappointed by Apple's latest creation, the iPad, which at first glance looked to me like an iPod on steroids, but perhaps because it was just what I was expecting _ at least on the outside. But Apple have ambitious technical goals and more features will become available.

Apple iPhone and the future

Database, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 27/01/2010

» This is a busy week for people following Apple. If you are reading this column on Wednesday, Jan 27, early yesterday Thai time Apple's First Quarter financial results were announced. This was expected to be another good quarter, following high sales over the New Year period: some reports showed a 31 percent increase over the previous year.
