The light dims in Hong Kong

Asia focus, Anchalee Kongrut, Published on 16/10/2017

» Like many Thais, I have always considered Hong Kong my favourite destination. Perhaps it's because I've long been a big fan of the soap operas and martial arts films from Shaw Brothers Film Studio that dominated our television sets and cinemas during the 1970s and '80s. Hong Kong in those days was the epitome of glitz, a unique, vibrant and advanced Asian city where Eastern and Western cultures melted together into an exciting blend.

LIFE

A place among the dead

Life, Anchalee Kongrut, Published on 26/07/2016

» Cemeteries are a sanctuary for the dead and the mourners. But the Bangkok Protestant Cemetery on Charoen Krung 72/5, known as Soi Susan Farang, has been known as a tourist attraction, due to the beautiful architecture of the memorial sites and splendidly carved gravestones. The cemetery, besides being one of the oldest burial grounds that remain unaffected by the urban development of the city, has a cultural value as a testament of foreign cultures present in Thailand from the mid-19th century until the present day.

OPINION

Narrow-mindedness of town planning

Life, Anchalee Kongrut, Published on 04/05/2012

» I have an odd driving habit _ you may call it loitering or straying. I tend to take local roads, alleys or sois if chance permits. To justify my behaviour, I often call these small alleys a "short cut" even though at times it takes me longer to reach my destination. However, these sois are my daily sightseeing. I love to drive past houses, shophouses, stealing a look at dark shophouses, or seeing lights from homes. Sometimes, I have seen house owners sweep garbage from their places, a soccer ball rolling or even water being thrown at my car. I can drive slowly, getting in touch with life along the way. For me, those sois are the charm of urban areas; it is like you are going through a labyrinth _ a secret route that provides an escape from the humdrum of the polluting main roads.
