We can always live in a dollhouse

Roger Crutchley, Published on 07/07/2024

» Thai tourism authorities are always quick to make the most of any new fad, which might explain the appearance of a life-sized Labubu doll on the front page of the Bangkok Post this week. Apparently, the mascot is part of a promotion to attract Chinese tourists. I confess to not knowing anything about the Labubu craze although the Post's doll correspondent informs me the designer doll is a "kind-hearted monster with pointed ears and serrated teeth". Hmmm.

You can't beat that old black magic

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 02/06/2019

» It is well-known that superstition is deeply ingrained in Thailand, from the poorest farmers to the richest businessmen, politicians and even prime ministers. If things go wrong, malevolent spirits often get the blame and the only way to solve the issue is to indulge in exotic ceremonies to appease them. It makes sense really -- in Thailand you won't get anywhere until you've got the ghosts and the supernatural on your side.

You can't beat a good song in the gridlock

» Earlier this week a veteran taxi driver told me he was a great fan of Elvis Presley. He proceeded to sing Love Me Tender for most of the journey. He wasn't too bad either -- Elvis would have been proud. The crooner cabbie said singing took his mind off the horrors of Bangkok's traffic.

A year most of us would rather forget

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 25/12/2016

» It is customary at this stage of the year to review events of the past 12 months, but this has been no ordinary year for Thailand. It has been a very sad time with the loss of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, which plunged the entire kingdom into a state of mourning.

Like walking in a winter wonderland

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 31/01/2016

» Visitors to Thailand may have been puzzled earlier in the week at the sight of many local people buried under layers of sweaters, scarves, jackets, rugs, balaclavas, blankets and unidentifiable woolly outfits you would normally associate with colder climes.

In Thailand, the little things mean a lot

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 16/06/2013

» During recent weeks there have been a number of reports concerning today's by-election in Don Muang district of Bangkok. News items have also appeared on the airport, which although in the same district, is spelled Don Mueang with that sneaky , "e" creeping in. It's very trivial, but that little "e" can be quite irritating and the different spelling must be a bit puzzling for readers.

You don't know what you've got till it's gone

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 16/09/2012

» Today is a somewhat sad day in that TrueVisions is closing down its DMX music channels due to lack of interest. You may well ask ''What music channels?'' as many friends who subscribe to the cable company tell me they didn't even know they had access to this music. And that is probably the problem... they've never really been promoted. I discovered them accidentally some years ago by pushing the wrong button on the remote, only to be blasted off the sofa by Led Zeppelin's Stairway To Heaven.
