» I wholeheartedly agree that the poor English published on the Ministry of Labour website is an embarrassment. However, the main issue is that the laws governing banned professions for foreigners (aliens) is desperately outdated and in need of a quick and thoughtful revision.

» The Office of Basic Education Commission (Obec) decided to introduce the Smart Classrooms project to replace the tablet PC project for students which was scrapped by the National Council for Peace and Order. The 1.17-billion-baht leftover budget, which was earlier earmarked to procure tablets for Mathayom 1 students in the North and Northeast, would be shifted and will be complemented by 3 billion baht from the Ministry of Information and Communications Technology.

» I noticed that the diagram (reproduced from the white paper issued by the Deputy Prime Minister’s Office) in “Subs plan tests navy to sink or swim”, (BP, Sunday, Aug 9) features not a Chinese-built S26T, the subject of the proposed purchase by the Royal Thai Navy, but rather a slightly bigger and infinitely more menacing Soviet/Russian Typhoon Class ballistic missile nuclear submarine.

The RTN’s main “justification” — to make other countries “stand in awe” — is weak. We already have the region’s second-largest naval force, behind Indonesia and ahead of Vietnam, yet with no conflict in sight. So, who are we going to stare down?
