» Though the rainy season has officially started in some parts of the country, it appeared we were in luck when rain clouds drifted off Phuket. The Sun was shining and the sky was clear when we arrived at Visit Panwa Pier, where a fleet of speedboats and catamarans were cruising the water to pick up passengers.

Phuket struggles amid a pandemic

» Arriving in Phuket, everything looked different. I felt the silence as crowds of foreign tourists have disappeared from Phuket International Airport. The atmosphere was lonelier than usual with only a small group of passengers gathering at the luggage belt. There were no long queues in front of the bathrooms or check-in counters.

» In the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, all eyes are now on illegal migrant workers -- or the so-called phi noi, or little ghosts -- who returned from South Korea to Thailand. Like those travelling back from other high-risk countries, the authorities have asked all returnees to self-quarantine at home. Unfortunately, some ignored the request.
