Memories remain

Life, Suwitcha Chaiyong, Published on 02/08/2023

» Growing up in Surin, the border region between Thailand and Cambodia, Marisa Srijunpleang developed a keen interest in the histories of both countries. However, she noticed that some historical stories were missing from written records. After talking to family members, she was surprised to discover they were survivors of the 1975 Khmer Rouge genocide, and how they had been directly and indirectly affected by the war.

Culled from our 40-plus playlists stretching back to January, these tracks represent trends, cultural highlights and states of mind that reflect the times we're all living in (and trying to make some sense of). Without further ado, we're picking up right where we left off last week with our countdown to No.1. On that note, thank you for sticking with us until the very end -- here's to the new year of fewer whales choking on plastic bags, of nobody getting trapped in a cave, and maybe -- just maybe -- of an election.

The bottle half full

B Magazine, Chanun Poomsawai, Published on 28/10/2018

» There's always an underlying sense of deadpan humour and laid-back nihilism to the way Kurt Vile approaches his music. This is especially true on his previous two records (2015's b'lieve i'm goin down and last year's collaborative effort with Courtney Barnett Lotta Sea Lice) as well as his latest, Bottle It In, which marks his first new solo work in three years. Recorded in several locations around the US while on tour, the 78-minute album is helmed with assistance from indie rock's upper echelon of producers including Rob Schnapf (Elliot Smith) and Peter Katis (The National, Japandroids), plus fellow artists ranging from Kim Gordon to Warpaint's drummer Stella Mozgawa.

From ideology to action

» 'Sex and bombs, all you need is sex and bombs to make the world go round," says veteran Thai artist Vasan Sitthiket, commenting on a 2011 painting from his "Sex Bomb: 24 Hours" series -- a portrait of himself drawn atop a scantily clad woman's body in a seductive pose, a bombshell by his side. Although the series is a denunciation of the modern pornography -- money, power and lies -- that we are fed on a daily basis, there's more to Vasan's work than just lust and violence.

A part of Myanmar's tapestry

Life, Kong Rithdee, Published on 24/06/2016

» Even with the civilian government, the military is still untouchable in Myanmar -- at least in the movies. Last week state censorship banned the film Twilight Over Burma: My Life As A Shan Princess, an Austrian production about the real-life Austrian woman who met a Shan prince in the US, married him and moved to Burma before the 1962 military coup d'etat that brought everything down. The film, which was shot largely in Thailand and starring mostly German and Thai actors, was supposed to open the Human Rights Film Festival in Yangon last Tuesday.

Tough-guy protagonist adds another layer

Life, Published on 28/09/2015

» 'Grain, meet the railroad," Jack Reacher tells himself, after he's picked the latest sinister little Nowheresville in which to spend a book's length of time. He appears to have gotten off a train in the middle of wheat country, for no better reasons than he liked the cryptic name of the town, Mother's Rest, and that he's got foolproof instincts for sniffing out trouble. Lee Child's Reacher series has hit Book No.20 with a resounding peal of wisecracking glee ("Are you going to be a problem?" "I'm already a problem. The question is, what are you going to do about it?"). Everything about it, starting with Reacher's nose for bad news, is as strong as ever.
