LIFE

Ain't no 'one nationality' movie

Life, Kong Rithdee, Published on 17/07/2015

» Cataloging movies by their nationalities is convenient, though it's getting less practical and less relevant, in this age of internationalism and cross-border influences. We have a shining case in point this week: P Chai My Hero, or How to Win at Checkers (Every Time), looks, speaks, and feels Thai, though its genealogy is truly international. The film is based on two short stories by US-based Thai writer, Rattawut Lapcharoensap and directed by Korean-American Josh Kim, who moved to Thailand two years ago and successfully mounted this independent production.

A dream to dye for

Muse, Napamon Roongwitoo, Published on 02/05/2015

» Sisters Wowdow and Raweeras Poocharoen and their friend Pornthip Patiluntakalkool look like they each belong to a different social scene. Wowdow, a 33-year-old softly-spoken interior designer, has a confident, mature personality, while her 26-year-old sister Raweeras is a young and hip artist type. Pornthip, 30, who has known the two for years, is a girly girl with an up-and-at-em character. Cool and composed, Wowdow was born and bred in America, while her artsy sister grew up in Chiang Mai. Pornthip, described by her two friends as a "go getter", was raised in Chantaburi province. Despite their diverse backgrounds, what the trio share is their passion for tie-dyed fabric, and the love for the brand they've built together.

Lost in space, mired by time

Life, Kong Rithdee, Published on 07/11/2014

» Suck me into a wormhole and spit out the bottom line, so here it is: Can the much-hyped Interstellar match the awe of 2001: A Space Odyssey? Can the new Christopher Nolan's film surpass the metaphysical wonder of Andrei Tarkovsky's Solaris?

Love is all?

» At the beginning or the end of a book there's usually a blurb, penned by the author, about what he or she did before taking up writing as a career. It's usually a number of things indicating to this reviewer that he couldn't hold down a job. Not surprising, as it was run-of-the-mill work.

An enjoyable read

» There’s no catching up with James Patterson, on his own and with a stable of co-authors, the prolific American novelist. While other writers turn out one or two works of fiction annually, it is close to one or two seasonally for the Yank scrivener. And they range from good to very good.

The Mighty Trio: Chopin, Hough and Debussy

Life, Harry Rolnick, Published on 02/09/2014

» It has taken 15 months, but Stephen Hough is finally giving Bangkok an encore. Rather, the great British pianist is giving a dozen-odd encores after his triumphant performance of the Rachmaninoff and Lutuslawski Paganini variations last year.

Keeping the alive story

Life, Published on 12/02/2014

» Opening the ancient, wooden bi-fold doors of Wik Kru Thawee Theatre is reminiscent of a scene in a mummy movie where the lead actor — perhaps an intrepid archaeologist, or explorer — pries open a long-sealed tomb. Dust stirs as the stagnant theatre air mingles with air from outside. Rays of midday sunlight beam across the darkened chamber, only instead of revealing a gilded sarcophagus flanked by riches, the only treasure to be found was row after row of wooden bench seats; the thrones of movie-goers of decades passed.
