A time for solitude

» Starting on Thursday, Thailand is under a state of emergency. Hopefully, this will help the country cope with the Covid-19 pandemic more effectively. At the time of writing, a full lockdown is not yet announced. But in line with the emergency decree, it's likely that social distancing will no longer be urged but enforced. Only with people staying calmly at home will it be possible to keep the highly contagious virus under control. China has shown that such stringent measures worked. If everybody complies, it should bring a good result here, too.

» Since the anti-Yingluck (Thaksin) regime protesters began their "Bangkok Shutdown" operation on Monday, traffic in most of the capital has been free-flowing. For the past four days the first thing I do every morning is turn on the Google Maps app on my smartphone to check what it's like on the streets. Every day and at any time of day, the roads and expressways that usually appear in yellow or red on the map depending on the degree of congestion are now delightfully green. Traffic-wise it's as if Bangkok is still in the long holidays mood.
Turning a corner on the cycle of acceptance

» Cycling has become one of the fastest-growing trends in Thai society. These days, although the numbers here are still low compared to Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Bogota or other bicycle-friendly cities, bikes are now a pretty common sight on Bangkok streets, in sois, parks and other places including office buildings, condominiums and exhibition centres.

» Twenty years ago, I noticed that every time I emerged from the forest after a long trek the first thing I craved was cola. To put a stop to this "addiction", I quit drinking all kinds of carbonated beverages from then on. Years later, every time I was on an overseas assignment I'd catch myself wishing I could have brought a bicycle along. But this time instead of quitting biking, I began a personal quest for foldable bikes in order to make my fancy come true.
