OPINION

Thank You!

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 06/07/2018

» Thailand breathed a collective sigh of relief on Monday night after a team of 12 teenage football players and their coach were found alive inside Tham Luang Cave in Chiang Rai after 10 days of being trapped inside. Though we may be able to sleep sound, there's still a long way to go (and many more dramas, rumours and photos of handsome rescuers to come) before they are evacuated to safety. It's already been reported that they may have to stay there for months so let's keep our fingers crossed and our hopes alive.

Such antics have gotten us thinking about certain scary beings that have become synonymous with the day. For our own entertainment (and hopefully yours too), we compare six well-known Thai ghosts based on six criteria to find the ultimate mascot for Thai Halloween. Use our picks to inspire your costume, or just continue to be amused by the local fascination with spirits.

Lakorn Love

» Lakorn, popular Thai TV soap operas, are a national pastime enjoyed by many. Even if you're not a fan, you won't be able to escape them with your friends confessing their love for phra ek (male lead) on Facebook daily, or the recapping of last night's episode at lunch. There's no denying that lakorn are an unshakable part of contemporary Thai culture. Since you can't avoid them, we here at Guru have come up with some lakorn-inspired games that all can enjoy. We have also dug up some unbelievable facts and drama that surround the cultural staple.

Double Lives

» Not everything is what it seems when it comes to defining someone by their occupation. For example, Itthipat Kulapongvanich made some serious cash by selling online game items before he became the CEO of seaweed enterprise Taokaenoi. Pleum Leekpai is the energetic, funny and politically incorrect co-host of TV show VRZO but he also wore a tie and looked professional during his time as an assistant to a Ministry of Culture spokesperson. And even Superman works as a reporter named Clark Kent when he isn't fighting villains and saving the world.
