» Re: ''Girl's death costs bus firms B10m'' (BP, March 9). It is sad to find out that an Abac student fell from a bus in 2004 while standing near the exit. In an attempt to beat a red light on Ramkhamhaeng Road, the bus driver had failed to shut the door.

» Bangkok residents, particularly city officials, had a simple and cheap reminder on Saturday of looming disaster. The fire that began on the seventh floor of Fico Place took no lives, and only about 50 weekend workers had to be evacuated. Complaints around the city stretched into yesterday, mainly about the horrendous traffic jams in the Sukhumvit-Petchaburi area caused because the 10-alarm fire forced firemen to close Asok Road. The grumbling is understandable _ until one realises just how easily we got off.

» Some cultures in the developed world have become so obsessed with safety awareness that they seem to have lost sight of common sense. The warning on a packet of peanuts that it "contains nuts" is one example of the abundance of pointless and seemingly needless cautionary signs stating the obvious.

» Wise men and fortune cookies like to suggest that we "forgive and forget" when bad things happen. It's not a bad mantra for those living in a Buddhist country. Remaining bitter and focusing on the past will only serve to hinder progress and create rifts in society.

» The Transport Co chief apparently has many problems to sort out. The state enterprise firm is trying to crack down on illegal vans running inter-provincial services. According to its own estimation, about 6,000 vehicles provide such services despite having no licence or approval from Transport Co, the agency responsible for inter-city routes. Thus far, it has successfully forced many of them to operate under its control, but more are still on the roads. Transport Co and the Land Transport Department stand to lose money from those illegal passenger vans as they do not have to pay route concessions and fees to the agency. It is unacceptable to allow these illegal vans to compete for passengers with the ones legally approved by the agency.

» Sanam Luang is certainly a place for important events; religious rituals, New Year and other annual celebrations, or demonstrations.
