Is everybody happy? You bet they are

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 25/02/2018

» It was nearly four years ago the powers that be announced the "Return Happiness to the Public" campaign and since then we have all been insanely happy, like it or not. So last week's news that Thailand has been named the "least miserable country in the world" for the fourth successive year by the Bloomberg Misery Index, hardly raised an eyebrow. However, there was some debate if there is any subtle difference between "most happy" and "least miserable".

Some still remember the 5th of November

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 05/11/2017

» It's been a busy week for contrasting festivals, commencing with Halloween, followed by Loy Krathong, while today some Brits will be marking Guy Fawkes Night commemorating the abortive Gunpowder Plot of 1605.

Not exactly a great sense of timing

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 30/04/2017

» A front-runner for this year's Unfortunate Timing Award has to be the Tourism Association of Thailand (TAT) proudly announcing a special Bangkok Street Food festival for June, apparently blissfully unaware of the ongoing campaign by city authorities to clear those pesky vendors from most of the Big Mango's streets.

All joking aside, it's not easy being funny

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 28/08/2016

» It is customary at this time of the year for PostScript to lighten up proceedings with what have been voted as the best jokes from the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, which wraps up in Scotland this weekend. The day I realised Thailand was different

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 17/04/2016

» I trust everyone has survived the Songkran Festival, suffering little more than a few damp clothes, and maybe stuck with a hint of a fixed grin. News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 20/12/2015

» Good morning! Well, I hope it is, although if you are anything like Crutch you are probably more likely to be scrambling for the pain-killers right now.

Not in front of the children, if you please

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 06/12/2015

» December is the time of the year when awards are handed out for novels and other literary efforts. However, there is one prize that most authors would rather not win — the Bad Sex in Fiction Award.

To make something popular, just ban it

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 18/10/2015

» Respected American judge Potter Stewart once observed: “Censorship reflects a society’s lack of confidence in itself.” That appears to be what we are experiencing with the Ministry of Culture’s ban on the film Arbat, concerning a novice monk who misbehaves.

OPINION

No crookery today, thank you very much

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 06/09/2015

» Today, believe it or not, Thailand celebrates National Anti-Corruption Day. For 24 hours, no one will be on the fiddle, or at least seen to be on the fiddle.

OPINION

Have you heard the one about the hippo?

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 30/08/2015

» I had been hoping to lighten the mood with a few of the best jokes from the annual Edinburgh Festival Fringe which concludes in Scotland this weekend. Unfortunately, the jokes are either not particularly funny or I can’t understand them. So prepare for a quick groan.
