What's in a name?

Life, Kaona Pongpipat, Published on 02/11/2016

» For "smooth cultural integration", Thai international study agency Smart NZ Education advises that students with nicknames like Poo, Pee and Porn consider alternatives. The issue made headlines earlier last month after a report by the New Zealand Herald indicated that students might get "harassed if nothing is done". That's not unlikely, despite the fact that "faeces", "urine" and "pornography" -- the formal English words for the aforementioned nicknames -- weren't exactly those parents' intention when their children first came into the world.

Out of the sunlight

Life, Kaona Pongpipat, Published on 28/04/2016

» Every use of the word "sunlight" in Duncan Macmillan's play Every Brilliant Thing, was replaced with "sunset" by director Pawit Mahasarinand in his Thai adaptation, which has just finished its run at Chulalongkorn University's Sodsai Pantoomkomol Centre for Dramatic Arts last week.

Three shows, three views, undeveloped ideas

Life, Kaona Pongpipat, Published on 27/04/2016

» 'Have you been to Korakrit's show?" This seems a common conversation topic in the art scene for now. This is followed by, "How do you like the show?", and if you don't, it feels like you are up against the contemporary art world, and that's just too much pressure. What's universally agreed, however, is his cushions are really comfortable.

Roving eye

Life, Kaona Pongpipat, Published on 13/04/2016

» After a trip to Saatchi Gallery, a major exhibition by 23 artists called "Thailand Eye" has finally made it home to Bangkok Art and Culture Centre, where it will continue through August. When the exhibition first opened late last year in London, it created a buzz, with these 23 artists being selected from a longlist of as many as 200. The exhibition is the final instalment of a series of three cultural events marking the 60th birthday of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, the first two being a khon performance at the Royal Albert Hall and the Thai Film Festival at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts in June last year.

Learning to let go

Muse, Kaona Pongpipat, Published on 17/10/2015

» If the stage play Cloture De L’Amour (Lerk! in Thai) last year hadn’t been a production by Chulalongkorn University, chances are actress Sasithorn “Heen” Panichnok would have won 2014 Best Performance By A Female Artist from the International Association of Theatre Critics (Thailand). But, as it was — and the awarding criteria excludes productions by educational institutions — the Thai-Indian Muslim unfortunately did not.

The sex ceiling

Life, Kaona Pongpipat, Published on 16/09/2015

» Bussaraporn Thongchai believes it would have been completely different if her paintings were displayed, say, by the fountain display at Parc Paragon. She's probably right. The main subject of her ongoing exhibition "I'm Not Your Holy Mother" at Ardel's Third Place Gallery is an old and haggard, yet sexually unrestrained version of the mother of Jesus, the Virgin Mary. One piece shows an up-skirt shot of a woman squatting, while the other shows a woman hung upside down on a crucifix, her wrinkled body and breasts weighed down.
