The scents of success

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 27/10/2023

» The luxury bodycare and aroma products all boast very traditional Thai scents like jasmine and lemongrass, but the flagship store they sit in is fashioned like a futuristic science lab -- with circular fluorescent haloes and an awe-inspiring line of glass columns filled with perfume.

For the love of design

» When House of Fritz Hansen in Soi Somkid first came to life in 2017, the white house from the 1950s it inhabited was polished into a showroom to display how luxury Danish furniture pieces could fit into a Thai home. Sleek and clean minimalism usually comes to mind at the mention of this Scandinavian name -- but the global rebrand that has been set into motion since last year is injecting quite a popping touch of colours, fun and modernity to its overall aesthetics.

» Those outside the fashion loop may not have heard of Dry Clean Only. » Last week, legendary American comedian Jay Leno appeared on NBC's Late Night With Seth Meyers and shared an example of how college kids (in the US) are painfully politically correct these days. He tells of a day when an intern asked him what he'd like for lunch. When he asked where the interns would be picking up their food, he answered they were "getting Mexican". To which, Leno replied, "I don't really like Mexican", and the intern instantly goes, "Whoa, that's kind of racist."

When art comes naturally

» Things worked out perfectly for Yanawit Kunchaethong’s exhibition “Print from Paa Sa-nguan”, which features prints made with colours extracted from forest plants. After all, the 108-rai forest in Petchaburi in which he sourced his materials is owned by his family. Helping him further, knowledge and love for plants and trees have been instilled in Yanawit since he was young by his father, Sa-nguan, and mother, who even visited the forest while she was pregnant with him. His father’s name, in fact, also serves as a pun in the exhibition’s title, referring to both a conserved and the family’s forest.

On cloud nine, almost

» Back in Singapore, Paradise Dynasty resembles a dark lavish cave, with lots of black marble and velvet too, and, honestly, food that didn't really taste that great. Except for the legendary signature Dynasty dumplings, the dishes in the food court probably taste better than the offerings there. And fried rice, but if you can't master fried rice then, well, reconsider your existence.
