Hollywood Movies With Crazy Thai Titles

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 22/10/2021

» Have you been back to the cinema as yet? As I'm browsing through movies for my first flick to celebrate multiplexes reopening (I went with Shang-Chi because duh!), I can't help but notice the difference between Thai posters of Hollywood movies today compared to those from bygone years. While Thai posters of blockbusters today stay faithful by transliterating its English title with Thai letters and translating its subtitle almost verbatim (eg Shang-Chi With Mysterious Legends of Ten Rings), the vintage counterparts are more-is-more and over explained. Not only do they feature different designs that are re-created by talented Thai artists along with Thai titles that have nothing to do with the original titles but also spew several visual spoilers. Here are a few Thai posters of Hollywood movies with crazy titles and taglines for your entertainment.

Pioneer in wellness

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 12/02/2021

» Chiva-Som International Health Resort celebrated its quadranscentennial milestone last year as a pioneer in wellness retreats in Thailand. The brainchild of Boonchu Rojanastien, who was a former finance minister and banker, started out as his personal weekend retreat where he went with friends and family to escape from Bangkok's hustle and bustle. From 1995, the beachfront 17.7-rai property has evolved into an internationally renowned wellness destination that has welcomed many A-listers and collected many accolades, including "Best Destination Spa" by Condé Nast Traveller The Spa Awards 2020. 25 years in the biz. They must be doing something right.

Thailand: The Land of...

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 06/11/2020

» I'm sure, I'm not the only one who has been rethinking Thailand's nickname The Land Of Smiles. According to Win Lyovarin, two-time S.E.A. Write winner and 2013 National Artist for Literature, Britisher David Lander, creative director at an ad agency, should be credited for coming up with the phrase. Lander came up with the slogan in a pitch for the Tourism Authority of Thailand. Fun fact: The Land Of Smiles is also the title of a German operetta, which premiered in 1929.

Govt plans that sound like bad ideas

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 21/02/2020

» Pardon me, dear readers, for the headline betrays my inadequacy in wordsmithery. You see, I put as much effort into coming up with it as the following esteemed people perhaps with their "ideas". It seems you can always count on the government for questionable plans but these three recent examples take the cake. Read on for your entertainment (which may be tinged with hopelessness).

(E)Special(ly) (Ironic) Days

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 06/12/2019

» The point of setting up holidays and special days is to celebrate or observe a cause, a thing or an event of significance. But as I scan through the 2020 calendar (to plan to use all of my days off in advance), I can't help but find that some special days in Thailand have taken an ironic turn.

» While some hotels have kid-friendly facilities as an afterthought, Novotel Hua Hin Cha Am Beach Resort and Spa takes providing fun for little guests seriously. They aren't kidding around with the introduction of Siam Adventure Club, which affords kids (and kids at heart) plenty of activities to enjoy throughout the day.

Why Thailand Won't be 4.0 Anytime Soon

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 25/08/2017

» We all have already heard the much-touted "Thailand 4.0" vision -- an aspiration for our beloved country to become an advanced version of itself -- but it seems all recent evidence points to the contrary. Here are some reasons why I believe the chances of Thailand reaching 4.0 are, unfortunately, very slim.

The recently-opened My Kitchen at Siam Discovery may look like your average food court, but on close inspection, you'll realise it's an all-star kitchen collaboration between six notable names.
