Winding down at White Wood Beach

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 11/08/2017

» Renaissance Phuket Resort & Spa manages to blend in with its green surrounding and yet also sprouts an air of chicness. The vast and airy lobby building which has turtle-shell roofs and understated art pieces looks out onto a beautiful pond and, from a distance, villas amid lush greenery to block prying eyes. On our way to a low-rise building where our Deluxe Rooms were waiting, we walked past white sands, lush bushes and palm trees.

When textbooks get it oh-so-wrong

» Textbooks are meant to inform learners of facts -- not alternative forms of fiction -- on a particular subject. They also provide students with information on things relevant to them, helping them to navigate their lives and make sense of the world.

Rebel with a Closet

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 24/03/2017

» Have you ever wondered what Sumati Sivasiamphai, our former illustrious editor, has been up to? It may seem like she's been keeping a low profile but it turns out she has been juggling several exciting projects. The Emory University graduate has been writing her own fashion blog that has a Thai-Indian POV, called Rebel with a Closet (rebelwithacloset.com, fb.com/rebelwithacloset, IG: @rebelwithacloset), enjoying marital bliss, launching an online jewellery business called Marry Me Diamonds (marrymediamonds.com, fb.com/marrymediamonds, IG: @marrymediamonds) and preparing herself for motherhood. Woah, that's a lot. We decided to catch up with Sumati and had a chat about style, selling bling online and proposing tips.

Risky Roads

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 09/12/2016

» Recently, the Child Safety Promotion and Injury Prevention Research Center announced a campaign to ban children from riding motorcycles in order to save the lives of the youth of today. Mind you, it's illegal for anyone younger than 15 years old to ride a motorcycle in the first place, but we're talking Thailand -- The Land of Mai Pen Rai and Spotty Law Enforcement -- after all.

To wealth, riches and bigger bellies

» The setting: They say don't judge a book by its cover. I say don't judge a restaurant by its name. Despite being called Fortune Cookie, this restaurant doesn't serve the American-Chinese food you would expect. But that's not such bad news. This recently opened Chinese restaurant serves the type of cuisine you'd find in Shanghai or the province of Sichuan, and it does it very well too.

Driving Test: Bangkok Edition

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 14/10/2016

» In a bid to make the roads safer, the Department of Land Transport recently announced a plan to raise the pass mark from 90% to 100% on the multiple-choice driving exam. Soon you'll have to answer all 50 questions correctly to obtain a driving licence. Of course, people can appear responsible on paper but they can actually, in real life, be jerks on the road. But if that extra 10% somehow makes the roads 1% safer, don't you think it's worth our collective effort to strive for full marks? This new requirement is expected to be in effect next year so, in the meantime, you can take my very own driving exam to find out how responsible a driver you can be (or whether you should never be allowed on Bangkok's roads, for the sake of everyone else).

» If you're a true foodie, you'll know Sukhumvit Soi 39 is, figuratively speaking, very savoury, with many eateries dotted along its intricate sub sois and alleys. Try Google Maps to see what we mean. Tucked away deep in the soi, Cocotte Farm Roast & Winery shares the same address with several notable restaurants inside the 39 Boulevard Building. This new kid on the block operates on noble principles, claiming that it prepares dishes using ingredients from organic farms and food artisans as much as possible.

Mung Ming Moomin

» Bangkok is home to several cafes themed after cute characters and Moomin Café Bangkok is the latest addition. This new eatery aims to steal our hearts away with adorable eats and a cute atmosphere. Opened in mid-April, the cafe is styled after the whimsical world of the Moomins, a famous and beloved cartoon family by Finnish illustrator and writer Tove Jansson.
