New looks, old values

Muse, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 22/04/2017

» 'Whatchu lookin' at?" Rattanarat "Ploy" Aurthaveekul might have yelled back to her husband's stare before they leave the house. Her taunting look is, however, followed by a sheepish chuckle, before she adds: "Gosh, this outfit is actually really uncomfortable and kind of revealing too. I guess I should go change." Killing me softly

» There's something simple, but exceedingly special about Tawjan Catherine Punyasingh's recently released cookbook Great Food Good Fest. Something about it just warms your heart and fills you with a pressing urge to get up to make these dishes, even if you are the type that couldn't cook to save yourself. Perhaps it is the book's realistic nature, and as we meet at her home, she whips up a strawberry hazelnut chocolate tart and pumpkin and corn croquette for us -- something even the most hopeless can make this holiday season.

» It's official: being nosy is now an attribute Thai people have willingly added to their biodata. We even have a particular word to soften it. The crude Thai slang suak, meaning irritably meddling and snooping in the most repugnant manner, has been given a curse-free incarnation, so people can use the word more openly and flagrantly. To avoid sounding boorish, people now say puak, which still sounds like the original slang word, but actually means "taro".

Lost for words

» I still remember the day Chai came back to class after meeting a girl during our gap hour when we were still in college. Pat was her name. She had perfectly light, fair skin and she was decked out in pearl earrings, a costly print scarf and a status handbag, according to his description.

Degrees of Fame

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 01/02/2013

» Can you learn to be a star? Perhaps, or at least that's what a lot of young people believe, for it has been biologically embedded in our instinct to want the easiest and most entertaining job that also comes with fame and money.
