A modern fairy tale

Life, Tatat Bunnag, Published on 01/07/2022

» I guess it's that time when Disney thinks traditional glass slippers are not cool for the young generation, but sneakers surely are. From the title of Disney's new musical romantic comedy, Sneakerella, you can tell it has something to do with Cinderella. Yes, it's based on the classic, but it's a new, modernised version. They gender-swap the characters and then dive into sneakerhead culture and dance music. Whether this sounds like a weird combination, well, such a movie now exists.

From a woman's perspective

» There's no gender when it comes to film because gender cannot confine or define talent. Although it might be true that the most obvious gender gap in the film industry today is the director's chair, and a lesser number of women work behind-the-scenes, that doesn't hide the reality that there are many more talented female filmmakers around the world turning out some of the best and most exciting stories than ever.

A plea for tradition

» When was the last time we went to a movie theatre? While most cinemas have reopened following months of pandemic-forced closures, I doubt moviegoers are ready to return en masse. As a movie critic who's been mainly working from home for the last 15 months, I miss the ambience of cinema -- the smell of popcorn, the posters advertising coming attractions or the greats of cinema's glory years. I miss finally watching that film on the big screen in darkness, the chilly atmosphere and surround sound that created an immersive experience that can't be replicated in a living room.

The day the world changed

Life, Tatat Bunnag, Published on 01/09/2021

» In the early hours of Sept 11, 2001, Kathy Comerford was getting ready for a usual Tuesday staff meeting at her office on the 70th floor of the World Trade Center's South Tower. That beautiful morning took a dangerous turn when a hijacked jetliner struck the building between floors 93 and 99, causing the tower to eventually collapse less than an hour later. Along with a small team of her co-workers at Morgan Stanley investment banking company, they barely escaped with their lives.
