The wonder of Oz at Thong Lor Art Space

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 11/08/2016

» Everybody knows about Dorothy Gale and her adventures in Oz, but L. Frank Baum also has a bevy of other characters just as endearing and unique as the little girl who got tornadoed into the magical land away from her home in Kansas. If you've never heard of Tik-Tok before, Thong Lor Art Space offers you the chance to get up real close to what is possibly the world's first robot character portrayed in literature in The Adventures Of Tik-Tok, Man Of Oz this month. The first half will recount the adventures of the Wizard of Oz and Dorothy, before heading towards the land of Ev, where the "mechanical man" who was forgotten in a cave is later found by Dorothy.

A world without newspapers

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 01/08/2016

» Our HR guy tells the straying university students that have a field trip to our office that the future of newspapers could possibly include aromas and 3D. Actually, the latter part already came into fruition with one of our wrap ads, where 3D glasses also were included with the paper for readers to see a particular image. This wasn't a gimmick to bring their attention back to the podium, but a genuine sense of hope, with perhaps a dash of fantasy, that something of the sort would materialise one day. It sounds like a Roald Dahl daydream, but I myself couldn't help but to imagine along how wondrous it would be if I could actually inhale the aroma of the reviewed dishes while reading Friday's food reviews.

Wanna Courtyard and chill?

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 29/07/2016

» It's a full-scale war going out on Thong Lor now, with the recent opening of 72 Courtyard, situated between sois 16 and 18. Those who brave to venture this already-packed road better bring it to Bangkok's glitziest wining and dining high street.

Beat the booze, for Buddha's sake

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 19/07/2016

» As a nation that makes some of the funniest advertisements in the world, it is no surprise that we are resorting to humour yet again to encourage less drinking on the advent of Buddhism's most important period -- Buddhist Lent. While monks are required to be in one particular temple or place, followers of the faith are encouraged to visit temples, listen to sermons and abstain from drinking alcohol, as one of the five precepts of the religion.

Blame the media, but not completely

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 19/01/2016

» Mums sure know best. Of all the motherly guidance that has been etched into my consciousness, a particular adage has never remained more timeless and timely. It was the very first lesson she drilled into me when I started to watch television at the age of three. When the commercial break from the cartoons kicked in, so did an earful from her: All advertisements are a sham.

In the dark

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 13/01/2016

» Thailand's advertising industry occupies both the highest and lowest grounds when it comes to pushing creativity. We're often regarded as the funniest peddlers in the world, and there's a long string of Cannes trophies and instantaneous LOL-reactions to prove it. But, at the opposite end of the spectrum, we also sometimes attract international media attention for the wrong reasons, such as the discriminating ads that continue to infiltrate the public sphere. Last week, beauty company Seoul Secret caused an uproar with its whitening pill tagline that brazenly voiced what other skin-whitening ads in Thailand have been subliminally implying for decades: "You just need to be white to win."

Tomorrowland magic short-lived

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 22/05/2015

» Overbearing social activists, environmentalists and vegans on my Facebook newsfeed can probably instil a message more original — and even inspiring — than what this 129-minute sci-fi romp can. Tomorrowland is a dystopian flick stuck in limbo, masquerading as a wondrous flight but is, in truth, a preachy bore.

Go for a Burton

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 30/04/2015

» Most Thai people probably own no less than one article of clothing from the Jaspal empire, and the name Arcadia Group has the same effect in the United Kingdom. This multinational retail giant is behind high-street names that literally fill a British consumer's wardrobe, owning globally popular brands Topshop, Topman, Miss Selfridge, Wallis and Dorothy Perkins. Central Marketing Group has brought this whole high-street haven to Thai fashionistas, with its latest import being Burton — a menswear line that has offered quality suits since its inception in 1903.

» A wake up call from Patranya Bhoolsuwan to anyone who'd like to be a reporter: if you just want to be a “traditional” TV journalist, without understanding social media, you’re never going to get the job. Based in Las Vegas, Nevada with CBS-affiliated KLAS-TV, Patranya is a rare Thai face anchoring and reporting for top-rated weekend morning and prime-time daily newscasts. After 15 years broadcasting in the US, she is still going strong and the Emmy Awards she has received for reporting are the icing on the career cake.
