The doctor who became a wrap star

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 10/05/2020

» It will come as no surprise that I know absolutely nothing about fashion. However I have been impressed by the stylish scarves warn by Doctor Deborah Birx in those White House coronavirus briefings. Whether draped over her shoulders like a wrap, or tied around her neck, the silk scarves are really quite attractive and look particularly suited to this elegant lady. Dr Birx's appearances have apparently prompted a considerable boost in sales of these upmarket scarves, especially the Hermes variety frequently worn by the doctor.

2019 more a celebration of 1969

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 29/12/2019

» It is customary at this time of the year to take a look at some of the major happenings of the past 12 months. This past year has been rather unusual in that it marked a host of significant 50th anniversaries. In fact the year was almost as much about 1969 as 2019. So to kick things off, let's just recall a few of those events 50 years ago.

You can't beat a good song in the gridlock

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 09/09/2018

» Earlier this week a veteran taxi driver told me he was a great fan of Elvis Presley. He proceeded to sing Love Me Tender for most of the journey. He wasn't too bad either -- Elvis would have been proud. The crooner cabbie said singing took his mind off the horrors of Bangkok's traffic.

Wild Boars become a part of history

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 15/07/2018

» This time last week the rescue mission of the 12 young Wild Boars and their coach had only been half completed. They had all been found miraculously alive, but the question remained how to get them out. And in all honesty, it didn't look great. It was a very strange, uncomfortable feeling. With heavy rains forecast, the initial joy of finding them transformed into the real fear that they could not escape what had become their watery dungeon. It was a race against time.

A look back at another 'amazing' year

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 31/12/2017

» It is customary at this time of the year to take a not too serious look back on the past 12 months, although there are some events you may well prefer to forget. If nothing else it will serve as a reminder that Thailand will always be Truly Amazing.

A tale of wasted days and wasted nights

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 26/02/2017

» One of my New Year's resolutions was not to write about Bangkok's traffic woes, a thankless topic. I held out for 57 days, which is not a bad effort considering the hours already wasted this year sitting in the Big Mango's gridlock.

Don't worry, 'Pokemon Go' is only a fad

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 14/08/2016

» Just when you think the world cannot get any more insane, along comes Pokemon Go. The less I say about it, probably the better, as gamers might suggest, heaven forbid, that I'm a bit old-fashioned, or to use the correct technical term, "a stupid old git".

Thailand has its own 'darling buds of May'

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 05/06/2016

» It is no secret that Thailand has not received positive international press of late, for reasons familiar to everyone. (Just don't mention tigers.) However, there is one area where the kingdom can hold its head up high and for that we turn to Thai womanhood. And no, it's not the latest result of some obscure beauty pageant like Miss Grasshopper or Miss Pork Balls.

Bowie a Starman in the Bangkok moonlight

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 17/01/2016

» Thirty-two years ago, on a cool night in early December, I was with a group of friends standing on the field at Bangkok’s Army Stadium. Only a few weeks earlier I had played football at the stadium, but I didn’t have my boots on this time — we had gathered at this rather unlikely location on the Vibhavadi Rangsit highway to witness David Bowie in concert.

In Thailand, there’s no need to go abroad

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 10/01/2016

» Earlier this week I experienced a reminder that if you are living in Thailand you don’t necessarily have to travel abroad to experience world-famous sites. Just let those attractions come to you.
