Debunking myth, retelling history

Life, Pichaya Svasti, Published on 28/10/2015

» History or patriotic myth? When I first heard of a new book, The Thai History, I thought of nothing but another government effort to build a sense of nationalism among Thais. The 208-page book was written by the Fine Arts Department and launched last Thursday at the National Book Fair.

Travelling towards neighbourly understanding

Life, Pichaya Svasti, Published on 06/03/2015

» In December, I expressed concerns about the bad reputation of Chinese tourists in Thailand and other countries. Unfortunately, problems caused by them have persisted and many Thais have started to react. Last month, Wat Rong Khun in Chiang Rai imposed a temporary ban on Chinese tourists after some of them dirtied the temple's toilets. Days later, a picture showed a Chinese tourist kicking sacred bells at a temple in Chiang Mai. Many Thais were understandably outraged.

Time for action against 'troublemaking' Chinese

Life, Pichaya Svasti, Published on 18/12/2014

» The series of troubles and embarrassments caused by Chinese tourists over the past few years has continued, but never fails to take me by surprise.

Is being single a problem?

Life, Pichaya Svasti, Published on 14/10/2014

» Last week, I read two news reports which reflect opposite viewpoints — an English woman who married herself and a Thai columnist's discriminatory comment about National Broadcasting and Telecommunication Commission member Supinya Klangnarong being single.

The right to refuse

Life, Pichaya Svasti, Published on 11/09/2014

» I was 17 when I started university. I remember feeling happy and more than willing to participate in welcome activities or initiation ceremonies. The longing to be among the cream of the crop was stronger than any other feeling I had, so refusal or objection to do so never crossed my mind. Fortunately the activities my faculty organised, in my opinion, never reached what is nowadays called “hazing”.

Time to impose controls on hazardous e-waste

Life, Pichaya Svasti, Published on 28/06/2013

» A few days ago, I read that the Thai Social Enterprise Office had to extend its deadline for accepting donations of old mobile phones from the general public due to the poor response to its appeal. The donated phones were to be given initially to a sample group of 100 needy disabled people under the One Stop Service for the Disabled Project organised in association with the 1479 Call Centre.

Fuming over first-car scheme

Life, Pichaya Svasti, Published on 27/12/2012

» The worst is yet to come for Bangkok's traffic. Over the past few months, I have spent twice as much time as before stuck in traffic jams. Although I am not an expert, I believe this has something to do with the government's first-car scheme. The programme allows new car buyers to claim tax rebates of up to 100,000 baht per vehicle per person. Since its inception, more than one million new vehicles have been purchased, or about 30,000 new cars a day. By the end of this year, the number of the "first cars" is likely to exceed 1.2 million.
