Seeking solace online

Database, Gotfried. K, Published on 03/11/2010

» It's no secret that I suffer from bipolar disorder, a major mental disorder, which is not so much an illness as a chemical imbalance in the brain. It has made my life like a nonstop rollercoaster ride _ up and down, year after year, stumbling from one self-induced disaster to the next, not realising until I was about 40 that there was something seriously amiss. With medication, the road has been smoothed somewhat, though I often feel like a zombie, which is neither good nor bad; not really much of anything at all.

Magic numbers

» A little over a month before companies are expected to fork over containers of cash at an auction, the actual rules for the sale of 3G licences are still unclear; the Magnificent Seven have insisted they will take up the gavel in the last week of September (Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said it would be on Sept 24) to auction three licences, supposedly worth 12 billion baht or some other invented number; but the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) apparently isn't actually selling use of the bandwidth to the winning mobile phone companies, but just narrow permission to use it for 3G, meaning that 4G and so on are unknowns; in addition; the NTC's vague threats to keep out foreign companies has sent the bidders into a tizzy; the main question is whether the threat applies to current firms such as AIS of Shingapore and Dtac of Norway - or just Singapore Telecom, or what?

NTBC Act gets green light

Database, Published on 02/06/2010

» In a rare all-day session, the senate passed the National Telecommunication and Broadcasting Commission Act by a vote of 85-1 with three abstentions; the upper house put some serious changes in the original law passed by the Lower House, so it could be a while before the act actually takes effect; for example, the senators watered down the national oversight National Telecommunication and Broadcasting Commission (NTBC) by increasing membership from an unwieldy 11 to an unworkable 15; the Lower House can submit to the wise senate, or fight the changes and try to negotiate the final law.

Database, Gotfried. K, Published on 12/05/2010

» The protests on the streets of Bangkok these days are a reminder that, taken as a whole, mankind has come a long way in the past hundred years - yet not everyone has been able to enjoy the trip, nor have all benefited from the enormous sacrifices required for industrialisation and participation in the modern world. It has increasingly become a world of haves and have-nots and the disparity has been fuelled, in large part, by science and technology.
