Chaiyaphum owed more than lost data

News, Kong Rithdee, Published on 11/08/2018

» In the age of video clips, one video clip is absent. At a time when we're inundated by cat clips, dog clips, accident clips, slap clips, brawl clips, grope clips, chase clips, murder clips -- when we even have clips recorded from the depths of a dark cave where light hardly reaches -- it's amazing that one crucial clip, shot in broad daylight, is missing, lost or made to be lost forever, along with transparency and maybe justice.

Oldman shines bright in Darkest Hour

Life, Kong Rithdee, Published on 12/01/2018

» Jowly, chubby, blustery, cinema-ready, Gary Oldman as Winston Churchill is an exercise in How to Win the Golden Globes and Maybe the Oscar. Which aspiring actor wouldn't want to become Churchill at least once, to act out that avuncular theatricality and grandiose temper, to assume that oratory bombast and majestic eloquence? They say you have to play a madman or a psychopath to get a shot at a best actor prize. Now we should add British prime minister into the list -- just ask Meryl Streep and now Oldman.

Even 'khon dee' can need a stiff drink

News, Kong Rithdee, Published on 16/01/2016

» Building a booze-free, smoke-free, sin-free society is a utopian dream of moralistic teetotalers, and we should sincerely admire ThaiHealth Promotion Foundation for trying. To pursue that dream, the embattled ThaiHealth goes to all lengths: flirting with conflicts of interest, questionable funding practices, and assuming a pose of moral superiority demonising drinkers, smokers and sometimes suggesting a brutal connection between the working class and alcohol binges.

Playing the Trump card in our backyard

News, Kong Rithdee, Published on 12/12/2015

» Is there a pattern here? The world watches in incredulity at the apparent display of right-wing, ultra-nationalist, anti-otherness outpouring that crosses the line from ideology into bigotry — from Donald Trump and his “No-Muslim” policy to the xenophobia-toeing Marine Le Pen in France, to Thailand’s own finger-pointing mobs shouting hatred at student activists, the threat of mass arrests and now the criminalisation of Facebook’s “likes”. Seriously? When squeezed, a wound bursts with pus. And pus is everywhere in the news.

Lost in space, mired by time

Life, Kong Rithdee, Published on 07/11/2014

» Suck me into a wormhole and spit out the bottom line, so here it is: Can the much-hyped Interstellar match the awe of 2001: A Space Odyssey? Can the new Christopher Nolan's film surpass the metaphysical wonder of Andrei Tarkovsky's Solaris?

Unfairly ripp'd, 'Shakespeare' must pass

News, Kong Rithdee, Published on 07/04/2012

» Four centuries after his death, Shakespeare's child suffers a miscarriage, aborted into a limbo by the Thai censors. Unless the appeal goes through at the National Film Board, you will be deprived of a chance to watch what has already become the most scorching movie of the year, Ing Kanjanavanit and Manit Sriwanichpoom's Shakespeare Tong Tai, or Shakespeare Must Die, an adaptation of Macbeth, charged with black humour, scheming harridans, buxom Lady M in blood-red dresses, and a political parable that peaks with a simulation of the infamous chair episode of Oct 6, 1976.
