Fun on a bun

B Magazine, Published on 27/09/2015

» A small group of young office employees in smart suits gathered in front of the Thaniya Building shortly before lunchtime. Despite a range of air-conditioned restaurants at that end of Silom Road, these yuppies were happy to queue under a hot sun while waiting for their meal.

To selfie or not to selfie?

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 03/07/2015

» The photograph was fuzzy, but ironically, I clearly remember the moment of coming across it, and what was on it, as if it were just yesterday. It was a picture of a pale, blurry blob of a face, framed by jet-black hair tied in a low ponytail. On that face, lay an eager smile and two unfocused specks of flash in what appeared to be beady and squinty eyes. Two pale arms on the sides implied that the camera was already as stretched out as far as it could be. But all this happened a terribly long time ago, circa 1994, way before the ghastly concept of the selfie was born.

Winner takes all

Asia focus, Published on 27/04/2015

» Twenty years ago, going to the movies in Thailand was not always an enjoyable experience. Many cinemas were getting run-down and owners were afraid to invest in improvements because film piracy was crippling sales. Tickets could not be booked in advance. Scheduling was arbitrary and a film could be pulled without notice if it wasn't drawing people.

Golden state on a plate

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 03/04/2015

» Opened in Feb, Abbot is named after Abbot Kinney Boulevard, a trendy and vibrant stretch lined with eateries, shops, art galleries and palm trees in California. The neighbourhood is named after American developer Abbot Kinney, and was dubbed "the coolest block in America" by GQ magazine. As a restaurant, Abbot offers California cuisine, which focuses on healthy creations made from local ingredients — minus the complicated cooking techniques. Add in a penchant for incorporating elements from different cuisines, and you can expect pretty unique fare. Hanging light bulbs with exposed cords and a bare floor convey the casual-yet-cool vibe, while touches of blue may remind you of the coastal state. The high ceiling also lends the place an airy and spacious feel. The mezzanine level (yet to open at the time of our visit) offers a more formal atmosphere and a private room. Most of the diners here are expats.
