Unconventional conservationist

» By look and temperament, Sasiprapa Raisanguan, a 22-year-old staff member at the Centre for Protection & Revival of Local Community Rights (CPCR), doesn't fit the stereotype of a Thai conservationist. She is no starry-eyed tree-hugger clad in natural-dye cotton, nor does she have a hemp rucksack or ride a bicycle to reduce her carbon footprint. At our interview in Chiang Mai, Sasiprapa arrives on her motorcycle, which she calls "a practical choice" to getting around the northern city where her office is.

For Thais, some of the popular destinations are the mountainous national parks, such as Doi Inthanon in Chiang Mai or Khao Yai. Living in a hot climate, we love to seek out the cooler places; last year, just over 93,100 holidaymakers spent their New Year holidays in one of 14 national parks, bringing in revenue of 3.58 million baht, according to the Department of National Parks (DNP).

» I cringe every time my Chinese friend utters the words, ''My God!'' It's because she does not hold any religious beliefs. Her People's Republic of China passport does not contain a section for official religious identity. ''I have no religion,'' she told me matter-of-factly. ''I do not pray. I do not go to church.'' She does not believe in God, nor gods.
