Correcting impressions, Apple news and a backup alternative

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 01/02/2017

» I bumped into one of my former students one evening last week travelling home on the BTS. As a computer engineer he is interested in technology and asked me about the AirPods. I took them out to chat. He told me that he had heard that they fell out easily. Not true, I said. Not once, even riding on the back of motorcycles through the Thon Buri sois has this happened.

Not just expensive toys

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 09/11/2016

» In the days following the announcement of the latest MacBook Pro computers, reports followed the usual pattern. The MacBook Pro misses the boat; Apple is doomed; Tim Cook should be replaced; and there were the usual questions about "what would Steve Jobs have done/said/thought?". An Apple product is like an iceberg: only a small part is visible above the surface; most is hidden.

WWDC 2016: Reflections in the Bay

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 22/06/2016

» Since the keynote presentation at last Monday's World Wide Developers' Conference (WWDC) I have given much thought to the implications of what we saw and to some future possibilities. Like the other media attendees at WWDC, we all take notes in our own ways at the event, then ask questions. I was able to talk to several people, including developers who are most excited at the potential they have to produce software using Apple's tools.

Flexibility of the iPad Pro

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 20/04/2016

» Over the past few weeks, I have had some debate about the iPad Pro. I picked up the 9.7-inch version two weeks ago, but had been using the 12.9-inch version since November. Like others who have used these, I understand Apple's claim that this is the future of computing. Those I have debated with, do not. Their main difficulty is categorising operating systems: this is OS X (or Windows), which is meant for work; this is iOS and it's not for serious people.

Raising the drawbridges

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 24/02/2016

» In a court decision in California, Apple was ordered to design a new operating system that would disable the erasing of all contents of an iPhone 5c after 10 failed passcode attempts. Within hours Tim Cook had put out a testy comment on the decision and Apple's commitment to its customers -- not the one specific iPhone that the FBI want pried open, but those of all customers, now and future.

A few days with the Apple Watch in Bangkok

Graham K. Rogers, Published on 26/08/2015

» I haven’t worn a wristwatch for over 20 years, so the idea of the Apple Watch did not initially gel with me. I use an iPhone and a pocket watch. I did weaken however when I saw some technical specifications.

Lovely New iDevice arrivals in Bangkok and elsewhere

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 22/07/2015

» Apple has been busy as of late and yesterday the latest quarterly figures were announced. I am writing this a few days before, so the results will be online elsewhere. Apple's predictions and those of Wall Street suggest that this was expected to be another good quarter. Already reports have shown that Mac sales have increased by 16% in a shrinking PC market and that Apple takes the lion's share of profits for smartphone sales.

My sexy 6 is finally here

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 05/11/2014

» For several days late last month, there was a tantalising page on the Apple Online Store for Thailand. Users could select the iPhone 6 model and colour of their choice, as well as the capacity, but the "buy" button was stubbornly greyed out. Until Friday.

The iPad in Bangkok: Two hours with it in my hands

Database, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 21/04/2010

» If you read that headline and are thinking of heading down to your local Apple retailer in Bangkok, don't. I was lucky enough to get my hands on a 16G iPad through the generosity of a local reader who teaches here. A friend brought him one from the US and he was happy to share this.
