Body armour an army job

News, Editorial, Published on 23/03/2016

» Weekend shoppers at Bang Na's Seacon Square were treated to a display of giant bears from children's tales. But there was a disturbing message alongside the huge Paddington, Lotso, Po Ping and Winnie the Pooh, among others. There was a sign and kiosk asking for funds to purchase body armour for troops stationed in the deep South. This is a shocking appeal to the public for help with a problem that is now years old, and which has cost lives.

Come clean on Anocha

News, Editorial, Published on 27/01/2016

» The Sundance Film Festival, currently under way in the US state of Utah, has two items of strong interest to Thailand this year. The first is the presence on the jury of Apichatpong "Joe" Weerasethakul, the film director who has won top awards abroad and the ban of the censor at home. This latest, notable achievement deserves praise, but the premiere of a British-made documentary is arguably even more important.

Pyongyang snubs world

News, Editorial, Published on 11/01/2016

» The claim by North Korea that it tested a thermonuclear weapon last week must be taken seriously. So must the reaction of the world. » A quick glance at the statistics for violent incidents and casualties in the strife-torn three southernmost provinces and four districts of Songkhla for last year in comparison with those of the year before should give a feel-good impression that the situation down there has improved.

Time to bring Thais together

News, Editorial, Published on 31/12/2015

» Goodbye 2015, hello New Year. The past year has been something of a puzzle. Most of what happened in 2015 was good news -- sometimes excellent. But some events appeared to reach new levels of threats, violence and cruelty.

Sanity absent in terror hunt

News, Editorial, Published on 09/12/2015

» Last week's revelation from Russian authorities of a terror threat to Thailand has the potential to get totally out of hand. The government has failed to show real backbone on this issue while police went off on a wild and unhelpful tangent.

Paris offers harsh lesson

News, Editorial, Published on 16/11/2015

» The terrorist attacks in Paris prove that the ISIS group has its hooks deep into decent society. The seven coordinated bombings and shootings killed at least 129 people, wounded over 350, and closed down the French capital under a city-wide curfew. France also completely closed its borders. The butchery inside the Bataclan theatre makes it clear that France has a mortal battle on its hands. So does the civilised world.

Bomb probe cannot stop

News, Editorial, Published on 26/10/2015

» Police, and presumably other authorities including the government and the military, have made a poor decision to create an exit strategy for the Erawan shrine bombing investigation. It must be hoped this decision does not come back to haunt them in the form of more violence.
