Weapons tactic doesn't wash

News, Editorial, Published on 07/12/2017

» Violence or terrorist attacks have not prevented other countries from holding elections. The United Kingdom, for instance, proceeded with its poll following a terrorist attack in June. But the mere discovery of a weapons cache is being used to jeopardise Thailand's roadmap to a general election.

Anti-nuclear treaty begins

News, Editorial, Published on 20/09/2017

» Thailand will be at or very close to the front of the line Wednesday evening to sign the new "Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons". As the name indicates, it is an international agreement that outlaws atomic and hydrogen bombs in every way. News, Editorial, Published on 19/06/2017

» The government and security teams involved in last week's arrest of suspects in the PVC pipe-bomb attacks deserve much praise. Initial reports indicate that a man with an anti-military obsession was planting the devices around Bangkok for at least two years, and possibly 10. The accused bomber was tracked and found through patient detective work. It is gratifying to learn that security teams were able to find this needle in a haystack and, hopefully, make the capital safer.

» There is a certain familiarity about the spat between some officials in the Philippines after the calamitous midnight suicide attack on a Metro Manila resort last week. Gunfire and arson caused by the attacker left at least 37 people dead. Most died from smoke inhalation in the fire set by the attacker at the Resorts World Manila complex not far from Ninoy Aquino International Airport.

No reason to derail polls

» It was no surprise that the "four questions" raised by Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha last Friday sparked public anxiety about a possible delay to the long-awaited elections. Many interpreted them as a strong hint of a postponement by the premier.

Stop attacks, or stop talks

News, Editorial, Published on 26/05/2017

» The bombing of a Big C Supercenter in Pattani on May 9 has perversely put the government on the back foot. The car bomb attack which wounded 59 innocent civilians has been condemned worldwide for its savagery. It also raised political questions without clear answers for Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and the regime. How the military proceeds in the coming days will probably determine whether there is even a slim chance of ending the southern violence.
