Apple facts, hints and tips

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 28/10/2015

» Apple has just announced its 4th quarter results. These should be available in several online sources by now. Income will come from hardware such as iPhones and Macs, and services. Some sales figures, such as the Apple Watch, will all be included in an "Other" section.

New editing possibilities in photos on Macs

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 14/10/2015

» Now that OS X has been updated to El Capitan (version 10.11) I have been indulging myself with the new extensions for Photos that I mentioned last week. This means expanding the functions of the operating system or applications that were used on Mac OS -- before OS X. I already have a number of extensions, most are from Apple, but a few have arrived from third party sources. These are all shown in System Preferences -- Extensions, in the following panels available: All, Actions, Finder, Photos, Share Menu and Today.

A few days with the Apple Watch in Bangkok

Graham K. Rogers, Published on 26/08/2015

» I haven’t worn a wristwatch for over 20 years, so the idea of the Apple Watch did not initially gel with me. I use an iPhone and a pocket watch. I did weaken however when I saw some technical specifications.

Flexible iOS devices and a mix of speculation

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 05/08/2015

» This week, my friends have been trying out their new iPad mini devices. Neither of them has totally switched to the newer models, partly because of content. In one case, it is due to the downloaded music videos on the older iPad mini. The other friend has been exploring the ability to draw, having found Pencil by Fifty-Three: the stylus I examined in February this year.

Apple of our eye

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 29/07/2015

» I have had guests at my home all week and it has been something of a mini-Apple event. I bought iPads for the two friends who already had an iPad mini each. I gave them the latest iPad mini 3. With these we had over a dozen devices together and I could not resist a photograph that included a MacBook, MacBook Pro 13-inch (2012), MacBook Pro 13-inch (2010), two x iPad mini 2, 2 x iPad mini 3, iPad Air 2, 2 x iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and an Airport Extreme router under the table. There was also an Apple TV behind me.

Lovely New iDevice arrivals in Bangkok and elsewhere

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 22/07/2015

» Apple has been busy as of late and yesterday the latest quarterly figures were announced. I am writing this a few days before, so the results will be online elsewhere. Apple's predictions and those of Wall Street suggest that this was expected to be another good quarter. Already reports have shown that Mac sales have increased by 16% in a shrinking PC market and that Apple takes the lion's share of profits for smartphone sales.

Arrivals: Apple Music and a MacBook

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 08/07/2015

» Last Tuesday evening, Apple updated iOS8 and OS X to include the latest versions of Music and iTunes to bring Apple Music to users. I updated my iOS devices first and signed up for the three-month free trial. The fee for users here is $4.99. Lower rates than the US rate apply in other countries, too. Some images that came with advertisements for Apple Music indicate new colours for iPod nano, iPod shuffle and iPod touch.

Apple's Swift U-turn

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 01/07/2015

» With its Music service becoming available this week, Apple walked into a lot of criticism over the decision to make the first three months free: from independent music labels and (to great publicity) Taylor Swift. As she noted when withholding permission for iTunes to handle her latest album: free means no royalties for performers.

Synchronisation from Mac to iOS

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 27/05/2015

» Last week Apple updated its MacBook Pro range, adding a new 27-inch iMac with retina 5K display for 68,900 baht and reducing the price of the top end 5k iMac to 79,900 baht. There was also a lightning dock for iPhones. The 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Pro computers have the new Force Touch trackpad and there are improvements: faster flash storage, longer battery life and faster discrete graphics. The SSD in the 15-inch MacBook Pro has throughput speeds of 2GB per second.
