You can't escape a rural soundtrack

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 03/01/2021

» Admittedly it's is not exactly earth-shattering news, but for the first time in 20 years I haven't spent the New Year holiday in Isan (the Northeast). This was not due to any dramas, but simply a combination of factors that made it more sensible to stay in the Big Mango.

Spivs, wide boys and dodgy kipper ties

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 22/11/2020

» Every now and again a word pops up which I have not heard for ages. That was the case recently with an email from a London-born friend who complained about "spivs" who had contributed to ruining his local football club's finances.

OPINION

No dodgy dealings today, thank you

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 06/09/2020

» Thailand marks its annual National Anti-Corruption Day today, which might possibly prompt a few wry smiles in certain quarters. Still, for 24 hours at least, we can be assured no one will be on the fiddle, or at least seen to be on the fiddle. No shady deals or siphoning of funds. No oiling of the wheels. It is indeed a time to rejoice.

Naval skirmishes among the soapsuds

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 30/08/2020

» The current debate concerning the purchase of submarines has sparked memories of some important naval battles I experienced as a kid. Well okay, it was in the murky waters of my bath and featured plastic toy submarines, but they were still memorable confrontations.

OPINION

For some, it's all getting to be a yawn

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 26/04/2020

» One of the most common complaints arising from the current self-isolation is fighting off boredom. This is especially the case for kids, even though they have smartphones and other electronic gadgets with which to amuse themselves. I don't envy parents of young children.

The Early Bird has made his last flight

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 08/03/2020

» Over the years there have been many talented foreigners who made Thailand their home. One such person was Australian Jim Davison who pioneered English language radio broadcasting after arriving in 1966 and continued for five decades. I am sad to report Davison passed away in Australia recently at the grand age of 104.

OPINION

A triumph of imagination over intelligence

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 16/02/2020

» I am not a huge fan of Valentine's Day, but considering the awful events of recent weeks, a bit of "love", however contrived, was a welcome break from the daily diet of depressing news. So this week, it feels like an appropriate time to dwell on matters of the heart, as long as it is not a cardiac arrest.

Bald pride and the curse of the comb-over

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 26/01/2020

» Last weekend, the Bangkok Post published an entertaining letter from the always perceptive S Tsow, who delivered an impassioned defence of being bald. Mr Tsow, who proudly describes himself as "a person of baldness", was particularly upset after observing on television one of Rudy Guiliani's associates (Lev Parnas) brazenly displaying a "cowardly comb-over".

Why a teen girl in Korat cried all night

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 10/11/2019

» It is always uncomfortable to read about hard-working people who are taken advantage of by unscrupulous characters. This appears to be the case with "Orm", a 15-year-old girl in Korat who had been making krathong floats for tomorrow's Loy Krathong festival, only to be arrested and fined for alleged copyright infringement.

OPINION

From Abbey Road to Sukhumvit Road

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 29/09/2019

» There seems to have been a never-ending stream of 50th anniversaries this year, all of which have contributed to me feeling increasingly wrinkly.
