The marvel of Logan

Life, Kanin Srimaneekulroj, Published on 03/03/2017

» It's a boundless shame, to say the least, that both Hugh Jackman and Sir Patrick Stewart will both be making their departures from their respective roles as Wolverine and Professor X after Logan, the 10th entry to their long-running X-Men franchise. Doubly so, since both actors have never been as riveting as they are in Logan, one of the best superhero films ever made, telling a very grounded, personal story about a broken man, not a superhero or larger-than-life symbol. In this regard, Logan elevates itself from a superb superhero film to a superb film, period, one that all superhero films to come should strive to emulate.

Dawn of a gaming dream

Life, Kanin Srimaneekulroj, Published on 01/03/2017

» Much as it is with movies, it's increasingly rare these days for a wholly original video game -- one that's not a sequel, prequel, spin-off or remake/remastering of an existing game -- to find recognition in a market overflowing with familiar, tried-and-true rehashes of popular products. Horizon Zero Dawn, the latest Action-RPG from PlayStation-exclusive developer Guerrilla Games, is one such rarity, a wholly original game that deserves the highest praise for its gorgeous, meticulously-realised world and ambitious story, dealing with such themes as creation and artificial intelligence, even if much of its gameplay is admittedly derivative of many open-world games before it.

Eyes on the road

» Dashboard cameras have been around for many years. However, the device has increasingly made its way into the collective consciousness of Thai society after a spate of road-rage incidents -- some with fatal consequences -- that dramatically and legally hinged on the crucial evidence of recorded images from the car cameras. The government this week also hints that it may mandate every new vehicle to install a camera on the dashboard, probably in effect before Songkran season in April.

Great sequel - more action, more story

Life, Kanin Srimaneekulroj, Published on 17/02/2017

» The original John Wick -- released in 2014 -- was perhaps the most enjoyable, well-crafted action film I have seen in years. Despite having a paper-thin premise -- retired (but legendary) assassin John Wick goes on a rampage against an entire army of Russian gangsters for killing his dog and stealing his car -- the film succeeded thanks to its masterfully choreographed action sequences and beautifully shot scenes. If nothing else, the original John Wick proved that you really don't need much in terms of story to make a great action film.

K6 Note fails to dazzle

Business, Kanin Srimaneekulroj, Published on 11/02/2017

» While enjoying moderate success in the laptop computer market, Lenovo has never been the most competitive brand when it comes to smartphones, generally offering devices in the low-to-mid-tier range. The K6 Note, the latest release in the brand's K6 series, which includes the ordinary K6 and the K6 Power, doesn't seem to buck the trend, coming with a mid-range Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 and a measly maximum of 4GB of RAM, which makes the phone noticeably suffer when used for extended periods of time. The same can be said for the phone's ability to run relatively taxing apps or multitasking. This lack of power and a subpar 16MP camera makes the phone a tough sell, even at its affordable price of 8,990 baht.

» Sporting a brilliant and relentlessly funny script, while somehow still maintaining and paying due reverence to Batman's identity and legacy, The Lego Batman Movie (LBM) is the best big-screen outing for the Dark Knight since, well, Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight (2008), being in equal parts a self-aware parody, worthy homage and poignant deconstruction of everyone's favourite gravelly-voiced crime fighter.

Nice cans

» Wearing the Bowers and Wilkins P9 -- the latest release commemorating the 50th anniversary of the famed British company -- doesn't feel like wearing headphones at all. Thanks to the large cups that envelope your entire ear, the comfy memory-foam and decadent leather coverings, the actual weight of the mostly-metal pair of headphones is largely unnoticeable, while the angled audio-drivers give a sort of "surround-sound" quality to the headphones' output, making the sound seem like it's coming from an external source from the front rather than a device on top of or in your ear. The sound quality is also sublime, offering distinct depths of sound that somehow makes every separate part of a song even more distinct.
