Effect yourself

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 30/04/2014

» Some photo apps for the iPhone and iPad can produce quite unusual results. One of my favourites is Distressed FX ($0.99; 32 baht). The name refers to effects we often see on designer jeans (think Diesel), giving them a worn look. Distressed FX has two main sets of effects: filters and textured papers.

Back the Mac up, fool

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 02/04/2014

» I have one sure way to make my students laugh — I ask if they have backed up their computers. There is silence, then a slight giggle, then the class breaks into laughter. With all the work they put into classes and projects, they risk losing all, either by theft, loss, hard disk failure or software problems. My teaching colleagues admit to backing up once a month or less — maybe more when running a project. It took a burglary and the loss of a Mac with all my photographs for me to take backing up seriously.

No Office space

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 26/03/2014

» This is not an anti-Microsoft column, it is pro-Apple user. However, after many years of using Macs, including pre-OS X machines, I just don’t see the need for Microsoft’s bloated Office suite, especially Word. Luckily for Redmond, many users do not have the same ideas as me. But for Apple to win, Microsoft doesn’t have to lose.

Apple notebooks: then and now

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 12/03/2014

» In the Walter Isaacson biography of Steve Jobs, Phil Schiller related, in the chapter “Think Different: Jobs as iCEO”, that on his return to Apple, Jobs drew a horizontal and vertical line on a whiteboard to make a matrix with four quadrants. At the top he wrote, “Consumer” and “Pro”. The two rows were labelled “Desktop” and “Portable”. While Gil Amelio had been trying to have more products approved, Steve said that fewer were needed.

Opening gambit

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 05/02/2014

» Since I first started using Macs, the Apple world I work in has changed somewhat, even in Thailand where there are far more stores than before: iBeat, iStore and uStore, as well as other outlets such as in Power Mall and many of the main department stores.

A farewell column: Pastures new

Database, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 05/01/2011

» In his 2007 introduction to the iPhone, Steve Jobs said it was great to have been involved in not one but three developments that have changed the world. With a little more humility, since I have been in Thailand I have managed to make a few ripples.

With the iPad it's easy to get a Life, a Guardian or a New Yorker

Database, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 29/12/2010

» It seems somehow fitting to write the penultimate eXtensions column on the device that (in my hands finally) is beginning to create major ripples not just through the halls of the computer makers, but the dusty palaces of the news businesses as well.

Using iPhoto in iLife 11

Database, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 17/11/2010

» As soon as I had installed iLife '11, I downloaded the 9.0.1 update and ran that before opening iPhoto. During the week, another update to iPhoto was released, bringing it to version 9.1 and returning Calendars to the "Create" selections. No-one is saying why this was missing in the initial release of iLife. I am writing this based on the latest update (9.1) (www.apple.com/ilife/iphoto).

If you need to get iLife, don't do it by mail

Database, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 10/11/2010

» I thought I had been smart by ordering iLife online as there were no copies in the shops, but I watched the online tracking as it remained at the airport for several days: Clearance delay. I checked with DHL on Thursday and was told that this was due to Customs. I think she meant with a large "C". I made a final check on Friday evening. I look forward to Apple's online software facility and downloading directly: no disks; no frustrating waits.

Image software that's cheaper than the 'must-haves'

Database, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 20/10/2010

» Mac users enjoy access to a rich variety of software and while some of the big names (like Microsoft or Adobe) are often cited, I tend to eschew these for a number of reasons, including economy.
