Startup key combinations

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 15/03/2017

» The arrival of the Touch Bar with the MacBook Pro brought into focus how some of us use our devices, especially personal computers. The emphasis here is on the word, "personal". Over the last three months (a MacBook Pro arrived in my hands in the last days of November) I have been able to incorporate the features that the Touch Bar provides into my workflow.

HomeKit accessories and device availability in Thailand

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 15/02/2017

» One of the side-notes from Apple's recent quarterly report was Tim Cook's comments about his automated home. While some likened this to the 1960s Jetsons, my attempts to reach home-automation nirvana more resemble the dystopian world of Sam Lowry in Terry Gilliam's Brazil.

Advances in retail experiences for Bangkok's Mac users

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 25/01/2017

» Research company Gartner claims that 20% of organisations will use smartphones in place of physical access cards by 2020. A few days before reading that, I had been in the new head office of COM7, where staff are signed in and out using iBeacon and a smartphone app. This also controls access to specific areas. I was attending an Open Day at the building in Sanphawut Road, Bang Na.

MacBook Pro: Too Few USB-C accessories in Bangkok

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 04/01/2017

» The disturbing lack of suitable accessories in Thailand has marred an otherwise great start to my experience with the MacBook Pro. Apart from Apple's own adaptors, there is almost nothing here for users who need USB-C connectivity.

15-inch MacBook Pro a delightful experience

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 30/11/2016

» Every time Apple releases a new product there is a rush to print. There have been thousands of comments about the new MacBook Pro and what is wrong with it (and Apple), but much of that wasted effort is by those who haven't even seen the device, let alone touched it.

Not just expensive toys

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 09/11/2016

» In the days following the announcement of the latest MacBook Pro computers, reports followed the usual pattern. The MacBook Pro misses the boat; Apple is doomed; Tim Cook should be replaced; and there were the usual questions about "what would Steve Jobs have done/said/thought?". An Apple product is like an iceberg: only a small part is visible above the surface; most is hidden.

» Apple has a busy week this week. A few hours ago, the latest quarterly results were released. Late tomorrow, Apple has an event scheduled. The first Mac announced itself with the word "Hello", adding: "It sure is great to get out of that bag." The invitations for this week's event have "Hello again" on them. It is anticipated there will be new Macs.

Bluetooth headphones and Apple: Beoplay H7 examined

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 28/09/2016

» On Friday evening, I was slightly surprised to see the release of an update to iOS 10 (10.0.2). This was to cover a problem that some users of the iPhone 7 had when the remote control would not operate (also fixed by removing and replacing the Lightning connector). With the update were fixes for Photos quitting for some users when iCloud Photos was turned on and an issue for some app extensions.

OS X with limited facilities

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 03/08/2016

» This week I am in Britain taking a vacation with my parents. The main problem for me has been the lack of internet. While my mother likes devices such as electric can openers, tooth brushes and carving knives, being online is unimportant. Her phone (which is off most of the time) is a good example of devices before smartphones existed.

Art and iPhone photographs: Prisma and other available apps

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 06/07/2016

» Early on Friday morning, there was some excitement in the overnight news about an app developed in Russia that applied artistic effects to photographs. This is not a new idea and I have had some apps that do similar tasks, going back to when I had the iPhone 3G.
