Reflections of local culture

Life, Suwitcha Chaiyong, Published on 28/04/2021

» When artist Raweepon Pradit visited Hat Yai in Songkhla — his hometown — an antique white pagoda with scaffolding around it caught his eyes. After hearing that the pagoda was too old to repair, Raweepon captured some aesthetic angles with his camera. The artist felt that the beauty of the pagoda, which was surrounded by metal poles, was extraordinary so he decided to take photos of it before it degenerated further. A photo of the pagoda was later developed into the artwork Structure, which is part of his latest collection titled “Memo Fascination” on display at Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC) and also online.

The evolution of khon

Life, Amitha Amranand, Published on 22/04/2021

» Choreographer Jitti Chompee's ongoing khon project, which includes Melancholy Of Demon, a dance performance that I reviewed earlier this month, is supported by the Ministry of Culture and departments and offices under its umbrella. This is a surprising level of governmental support granted to a contemporary dance artist who wants to do not-so-genteel things with khon and the character of Tossakan. I still remember how in 2006 the Ministry of Culture reportedly forced Somtow Sucharitkul to change the scene in his opera Ayodhya that depicted the death of Tossakan (Ravan in the opera version) onstage, a practice that is considered a bad omen in Thailand.

Drawing what the eye sees

Life, Suwitcha Chaiyong, Published on 24/02/2021

» Residents of the Mahakan Fort Community were evicted from their homes in 2017 after the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) decided to turn the historic area into a public park. Before everything was torn down, Bangkok Sketcher, a group of artists who draw on location, visited the site to capture the final moments of the community. Three urban sketchers in the group -- Suppachai Vongnoppadondacha, aka Louis Sketcher, Pitirat Yoswattana and Sompong Ngamsangrat -- were overwhelmed to witness the scene and were drawn to the architectural structures that would soon be demolished.
