Explore hidden gems outside Bangkok

» The other day when I learned that the Tourism Society, an academic network of communities that run tourism operations, was planning an outing to Ban Sala Daeng Nuea and nearby sites of interest, my heart leapt with joy. This Mon community by the Chao Phraya River is one where the residents still cherish their cultural heritage. Located in Pathum Thani's Sam Khok district, which is only 37km or so from Pak Kret, Nonthaburi, where I live, Ban Sala Daeng Nuea and its namesake temple are among those places in adjacent provinces that I've long wanted to visit but somehow never got the chance to.
Celebrate Phi Ta Khon

» The town of Dan Sai in Loei province invites all to its most famous cultural event, the Phi Ta Khon Festival where locals from several communities take part in fun-filled processions through the town while donning colourful ghost masks. This year, the festivity is scheduled for July 5-7. As usual, the venues are Wat Phon Chai and the nearby Dan Sai district office.

Appreciating Kantang's past glory

» Of the six provinces along the Kingdom's southern peninsula, only Trang can be reached via railway. The Andaman rail tracks run past Trang city and end in Kantang, which is connected to the Andaman Sea 15km or so away by the Trang River. After its establishment in 1893, Kantang acted as a major socio-economic hub in the area and was an important port for goods from the West.

» This year, National Children's Day was not just about parents spending quality time with their offspring and Thai society paying attention to the younger generation, the so-called "future of the nation". No, on Saturday a huge number of grown-ups also took the time to reminisce about their own childhood.It was another viral phenomenon on the internet. To mark the occasion, there was a widespread practice of people, celebrities included, of course, posting cute and often funny portraits from their school days on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and other social networking sites. Some even juxtaposed their old pictures with those of their little ones, revealing the striking similarities that attracted loads of "likes" and admiring comments.

» Maybe you didn't notice. Or maybe you haven't heard about it at all. But last week there was a small report in the Thai media about the discovery of a Buddha's footprint in Lampang said to date back to the Dvaravati Period more than 1000 years ago.
