CDC must do its homework

News, Editorial, Published on 06/08/2015

» The Constitution Drafting Committee (CDC)'s apparent about-face over its decision to take away the off-budget funding for the Thai Health Promotion Foundation (ThaiHealth), Thai PBS TV station and the National Sports Development Organisation and to subject them to central budgeting and parliamentary oversight, like other state organisations, is indeed a welcome move.

TIP issue cannot die

News, Editorial, Published on 05/08/2015

» An unsettling and downright dangerous mood has followed last week's US Trafficking in Persons (TIP) report. That report, which left Thailand on the list of the world's worst countries for this issue, noted there is much to do on this subject. The general reaction, however, has been different. From Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha on down, the country is rather pleased with its actions between April 1 and July 26, which are neither reflected nor reported in the US ratings. Thailand is also disgruntled about the unfairness of parts of the US process. This has led much too quickly to the insidious feeling that next year's TIP report will note the achievements, and let's move on.

Get them registered

News, Editorial, Published on 04/08/2015

» The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC), formed to ensure "the people's airwaves" were properly used, has created an unnecessary delay over SIM card registration. After last Friday's delayed but absolutely final deadline, the NBTC is seeking yet another three-month extension. It is really time to bring this business to a conclusion.

Suthep is a step behind

News, Editorial, Published on 03/08/2015

» The meeting and the statements by Suthep Thaugsuban and his reconstituted People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) pose a problem for the military regime. In order to regain the public spotlight, Mr Suthep had to promise something he could not deliver — a presentation without politics. He then proceeded not to deliver it. Mr Suthep's "political" meeting should, however, convince the military to allow such meetings and statements for all.

Spare the outrage and act for animals

News, Editorial, Published on 02/08/2015

» Betty White has spoken: the loveable 93-year-old golden girl of television wants a pound of flesh from the man who killed, beheaded and skinned Cecil the lion. The long-time animal activist called the lion’s death “a heartbreaker” and added “you don’t want to hear some of the things I want to do to that man”. Consider it official, then, that Walter Palmer, 55, became the world’s most hated man of the week for successfully slaughtering the 13-year-old lion who was the pride of the Zimbabwean savannah.

The moral high ground

News, Editorial, Published on 29/07/2015

» The decision of the spiritual leader of the country's Muslims to speak out on the barbaric killing of a monk in Pattani last weekend is most welcome. The Office of the Chularatchamontri, also known as the Sheikhul Islam, correctly described the bomb attack on an alms ceremony as unmerciful. A monk and a policeman were killed by the bomb. Two soldiers, a monk and three local residents were wounded. The attack was unprovoked and deserves strong condemnation from all quarters.
