A battle worth fighting

Life, Kanin Srimaneekulroj, Published on 19/01/2018

» Towards the end of 12 Strong -- the new Jerry Bruckheimer-produced war movie that hit Thai theatres this week -- there is a scene featuring protagonist Captain Mitch Nelson (Chris Hemsworth), in full US army war-gear, leading a charging column of Afghan freedom-fighters on horseback into a Taliban gunline, complete with tanks and missile-launchers. In true Hollywood super-soldier fashion, the captain picks off jihadists left and right while holding his assault rifle one-handed, sprinting his horse headfirst into a flurry of scything machine-gun rounds. He comes out the other side unscathed of course, thanks to his prodigious plot armour, and proceeds to save the day as scores of freedom fighters are cut down all around him.

Prioritising human rights

Life, Kanin Srimaneekulroj, Published on 27/11/2017

» What exactly is a human right? The most obvious way to answer that question may be to point toward the 30 Articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). Signed in 1948 and ratified by 48 out of 58 member countries of the UN at the time, the declaration affirms several rights an individual must be afforded as a human being, such as the right to life, opinions and expression, or the right to not be subjected to arbitrary imprisonment or torture.

Assuming a role on the international stage

» When World War I erupted in July 1914, Siam under the reign of King Rama VI declared itself neutral. Having maintained strong diplomatic ties with various countries from both sides of the conflict, there was little reason for the small country in Asia to enter the war on either side, far removed from the conflict in Europe, and with nothing to gain from taking part.

» Say what you will of Avatar, James Cameron's 2009 sci-fi epic. Almost a decade since it was released, the film remains the highest-grossing in terms of worldwide box office revenue, with four upcoming sequels and even its own themed area in Disney World, alongside such titans as Star Wars and Marvel. In other words, Avatar is a big deal to a lot of people.

Enlightenment during Full Moon

» At a time when Thai Buddhists may have been more than a little disturbed by all the unbecoming news involving monks, culminating with the clashes between some hot-headed clergy and soldiers at Phutthamonthon Park on Tuesday, we welcome Makha Bucha, a major religious occasion that falls on Feb 22.

A bridge too far

Life, Kanin Srimaneekulroj, Published on 15/02/2016

» The game of bridge has made unlikely headlines. Ten days ago policemen and soldiers as well as local government officials in Pattaya raided a Jomtien & Pattaya Bridge Club get-together, arresting 32 foreign bridge players on gambling charges. Police reported finding a computer and score sheets at the scene, but no money, leading them to suspect that the players were transferring money online.
