No longer places to just pass by

» Mae Sot city in Tak province is widely known as one of the Kingdom's largest hubs of border trade. However, for holiday-makers, it's often overlooked. I, for one, have made brief stops in Mae Sot several times, on my way to Umphang to its south, to Mae Sariang and Mae Hong Son to its north, and even to Mawlamyine, the capital of Myanmar's Mon State to the west.

» A picture is worth a thousand words, so they say. But sometimes even a thousand pictures cannot say enough. The photos you see on this page show some of the many beautiful houses in Phrae's old town. But, of course, there is more than meets the eye. Each house has its own story, some also played an important part in the history of the town, and even that of the Kingdom.

» Independence Day doesn't exist on the Thai calendar, thanks to the countless number of patriots in the past who devoted their lives to protect their homeland from foreign rule. One of the heroes we should not forget is the great King Chulalongkorn (Rama V), who is remembered through an annual national holiday on Oct 23.

» Kazakhstan is not a totally unfamiliar name to the average Thai, since it is occasionally mentioned in news reports, especially those concerning sports. One of the republics of the former Soviet Union, it is now the ninth largest country in the world with a land area five times that of Thailand's. It is a major oil exporter and thus one of the most prosperous countries in Central Asia.

» Connected to the southeast of Chiang Mai, Lamphun is geographically larger than many other provinces. Yet to many it seems like a tiny spot in the Kingdom, and is virtually invisible on the tourist trail. It's a pity travellers do not know what they are missing.
