Snake invasion targets our homes

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 05/10/2020

» It's not something that makes headlines but it happens so often in this country and there is no law to protect you. Almost every day, people find trespassers in their homes in the form of serpents.

Where's my durian?

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 19/06/2017

» The durian season is now in full swing, but some discernible lovers of the spiky fruit, myself included, are utterly upset. In Bangkok, from roadside stalls and fresh markets to shopping malls and even social media, the King of Fruits is virtually everywhere you look. But still I don't see the once-common variety that I have been waiting for, the one I'm dying to savour.

The trouble with seeing double

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 24/12/2015

» The other day I dropped by at a coffee shop for a caffè latte. When I was told my order was ready I had to rub my eyes hard because I saw the young lady at the counter handing me two cups instead of one. Nope, it wasn't a promotion, there was no "buy one, get one free" sign anywhere in the shop. As I was the only customer, it wasn't that she was giving me someone else's coffee, either. I looked around and realised there was something terribly wrong... with me.

Supporting the coup, boycotting brands

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 26/06/2014

» It wasn’t long enough ago that I could have forgotten. For half-a-year before the coup, so many Thais, the number reaching millions on certain days, left the comfort of their homes and took to Bangkok’s streets in peaceful protests against the highly corrupted previous government. Almost on a daily basis, they were attacked by armed men. Dozens had been killed, children included, while many more were injured and have to live the rest of their lives with physical disabilities. The police never arrested any of the murderers. At the time, the United States and the European Union never showed any concern. Understandably, it was purely Thailand’s internal affairs and none of their business.
