Watch this space

News, Postbag, Published on 22/12/2018

» Politicians and political parties are claiming Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha is unable to solve Thailand's corruption problems by referring to his deputy, and the watch scandal. If this is set to be the new standard of intolerable corruption, Thailand is moving forward. But for that to happen, politicians and parties now heavily criticising Gen Prayut have to stick to the 25 watches norm also when in power. I am sceptical, especially with the new party that wants to move "forward" by moving backwards, returning to the old democracy that was not so much of a democracy.

B Magazine, Andrew Biggs, Published on 25/11/2018

» Yesterday, the Ploenchit Fair completed a full circle. The quintessential British event returned to its mother's breast, the British embassy, as a swansong for the grounds themselves. There are the various embassy balls, of course, and this year Fight Night made a successful return after its alleged demise in 2016.

Sheltered paradise

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 28/09/2018

» One of the greatest things in life is to be able to do anything, anywhere, at your own pace while on holiday. I may have the extreme in mind (when you can afford to wake up at 3pm, begin your day at 5pm or get a decent slice of culture all within a short walk away), but if convenience and not having to catch some weird local sickness are part of the package, then why not, right? Of course, not all of us may be free to travel during the high season, when there are no storms to put a damper on our getaway. But even if money cannot buy impeccable weather, it can still buy you an exquisite holiday experience and pictures, if you just know where to look.

News, Postbag, Published on 15/09/2018

» In a country often said to have dual prices there is nowhere with such a great difference as in the theatre of political protest and the price to be paid for making your statement. Ms Nuttaa Mahattana, Pai Dao Din, and others have all come under extreme pressure, had visits from soldiers, spent time in detention and found their futures threatened. Some would say that's the price they must pay for their dissent.
