» It was sad to learn of the passing of Dame Vera Lynn, Britain's wartime singer known as the "Forces Sweetheart''. Although she was 103, her death still came as a shock as she was one of those inspirational people you thought would go on forever.
It's 'Sherpa time' without the mountain

» Towards the end of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson's uncomfortable grilling by MPs last week he complained that preparing for the meeting had taken up a lot of "Sherpa time". As it seems unlikely Boris is planning an Everest expedition, the "Sherpas" he was referring to are apparently those people with the unenviable task of helping him prepare for such questioning, or more accurately, the ones who do all the hard work.
The man in the 'rather uncomfy' mask

» Despite diligently wearing a face mask on rare excursions out of the house, I admit to not particularly enjoying the experience, finding the masks quite stifling. Admittedly that's a small sacrifice if it keeps me and others healthy. I certainly wouldn't make a good masked bandit. It's probably the long farang nose that's the problem. I don't envy the many people who have to wear a mask all day, especially in the tropical heat.

» One of the most common complaints arising from the current self-isolation is fighting off boredom. This is especially the case for kids, even though they have smartphones and other electronic gadgets with which to amuse themselves. I don't envy parents of young children.

» In difficult times like this it is always a bit tricky writing a light-hearted column supposedly of a jocular nature, although admittedly often failing in that respect. But we have plenty of writers to handle the serious stuff, so PostScript will battle on regardless, albeit in a slightly subdued fashion.

» It is customary at this time of the year for PostScript to whine about two specific topics -- the overwhelming heat and the approaching Songkran festival. As regards the first, I can safely say it has been "a bit on the warm side". In fact it's been sizzling, sweltering, scorching and for us ancient folks, totally discombobulating, or to use the correct meteorological terminology, "bloody hot".
