Come Rain or Shine

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 16/09/2022

» Everyone and their mother are well aware that floods suck, period. But give it to the Thais who manage to make the most of the rains as shown in these pictures, which I hope will lighten up the heavy rain (with no intention to glamourise it).

Uniquely Thai Logic

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 17/01/2020

» A school in Pathum Thani was recently exposed for having the controversial policy of gauging the loudness of students singing the national anthem. They were so serious about it that they divided the students into three categories, based on how loud they are: green, yellow and red. If a student is given green, then they pass. Yellow means they have to sing it twice. Red means they have to sing it thrice. WTF, you ask? This idea is supposed to measure how much students love Thailand. The louder they sing, the more patriotic they are. Simple logic. Of course, the school scrapped this unnecessary practice after receiving overwhelmingly negative feedback from the public. Simple logic, too.

The road to redemption

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 21/09/2018

» Akkarin "Rung" Puri spent almost half of his life behind bars. Instead of hiding his dark past, he's open about his ex-inmate status and uses it to inspire convicts to change their way and campaign for understanding and, more importantly, second chance for them to be part of society again. A guitar maker (Be Light Guitar; fb.com/belightguitar) and speaker at prisons, Rung talked to us about his long road to redemption.

Funny product name fails: Thailand's edition

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 09/03/2018

» English isn't Thailand's official language and that may explain incidents of unintentionally funny product names or slogans in English of Thai products. Some may be the case of not knowing the dirty nuances of English language, while some may argue that the marketing team was being cheeky and clever so that people will talk about their products' curious names. I decided to compile funny product names in recent times for your not-so-SFW entertainment. I didn't get paid by the owners of these products, btw. They have been selected simply because of their funniness -- intentionally or not.

» Ademonstration against a controversial dam project in Mae Wong National Park will start at Bangkok Art and Culture Centre tomorrow. The dam plan has been criticised for its lack of transparency, questionable effi ciency in preventing future fl ooding and its threat to irreplaceable trees and wildlife. To deputy PM Plodprasob Suraswadi, forests can be regrown and wildlife bred, but an online petition against the project on Change.org has garnered over 113,401 signatures, becoming the biggest campaign of its kind in Asia (who knew that Thais are such environmentalists?!).

To catch a Thai thief

» We often think the Thai police force suck at their job (but are productive when it comes to gimmicky initiatives such as Ja Choey 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0), but we guess sometimes it doesn't matter because criminals aren't such smart cookies themselves. (That's probably why they chose a life of crime in the first place.) To give police some slack, we've found incidents that show how hilariously some stupid criminals got nabbed by the authorities for your entertainment. Don't do illegal things and/or be this stupid, kids.
