Home to some 60,000 people, it tends to be categorised by the security forces as "troublesome", lumped together with neighbouring districts like Bacho, Yi-ngo, Rangae and Si Sakhon as well as Raman and Bannang Sata in the adjoining province of Yala. All of these areas have become notorious over the past few decades as bases for armed separatists operating in the far South _ or have been labelled as such by outsiders.
