» HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn is an acknowledged scholar of China, having studied the Chinese language for over 30 years. She first visited China in 1981, a trip which resulted in her first book on China called Yam Dan Mungkorn (Travels Through The Land Of The Dragon). She has made a total of 38 trips to China, visiting all 22 provinces and five autonomous regions. She has written 13 travelogues on China, translated Chinese poetry compiled in two books, translated several novels as well as other articles on China.

» Local publishers Nanmeebooks has just brought out a translation by HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn of a Chinese-language novel which reflects on the conflict of values and morals between traditional and contemporary Beijing society in a narrative which spans several decades, starting with the revolution that brought the communists to power.

» My 96-year-old mother has the kind of health any 60-year-old would kill for. Her blood pressure is normal, her sugar and cholesterol levels are better than mine. She enjoys as much food as her remaining teeth allow and all her bodily systems are functioning normally, more or less.

» Are you feeling happy today? That was one of the questions asked for the World Happiness Report which was launched earlier this month by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) and the Earth Institute, Columbia University. It's interesting in that the world is suddenly realising something the tiny Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan has known all along, that "Happy people live longer, are more productive, earn more, and are also better citizens".
