Khmer art in Sa Kaeo

» Almost 1,000 years ago, this grand Khmer architecture was dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva and called Pattharatekla, according to an inscription. After 20 years of restoration, Sdokkokthom Sanctuary, 34km from the Thai-Cambodian border in Khok Sung district, Sa Kaeo province, has become a popular attraction since 2014. Beginning in April next year, it will officially open as Thailand's 11th historical park.

» Last week, there was good and bad news about the environment. I learnt a lot about environmental protection measures during my June 6-7 visit to Japan's Yakushima Island, of which 20% of the total area is registered as a World Natural Heritage Site by Unesco. Later on June 9, I was happy to hear that various groups of people planted trees on some parts of deforested land in Nan and many other Thais planted trees elsewhere and also at home.

» Situated right in the middle of Isan, the country's northeastern region, 512km from Bangkok by road, Roi Et has been a major settlement for more than 300 years. It was once called Saket Nakhon and referred to as "a large city with 11 gates and 11 vassal cities", but in modern-day terms it would be more accurately described as a medium-sized market town.

» Only about 100km northwest of Bangkok, Suphan Buri province has a lot for visitors to see and do, ranging from forests, waterfalls and an aquarium to major temples. However, the National Museum Suphan Buri is often overlooked by visitors, even by culture vultures _ maybe because it is relatively new or because it is overshadowed by another outstanding local museum.
