For the (curious) records

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 13/09/2019

» It seems like not a month goes by without Thailand being recognised on a global scale. Recently, Bangkok beat Paris and London as the most visited city in the world for 2018, for the fourth consecutive year, according to a MasterCard ranking. Thailand's capital hosted 22 million overnight travellers. In the midst of the flattering and not-so-flattering world titles Thailand has received, you may not be aware of the times we receive recognition for rather peculiar feats. If your curiosity is piqued, allow me to present the strange/cool world records in the Land of Smiles.

Thai-Style Two-Sentence Horror Stories

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 26/10/2018

» To help you get into a spooky mindframe for Halloween, I would like to share a few Thai-style horror stories. But since people have a shorter attention span these days (who doesn't?), I have summed up the shortest stories that have been circulated online. If you get all of them, you are pretty well-versed in Thai culture. Kudos!

Pop culture explosion

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 09/05/2014

» Darth Vader and his Stormtroopers will invade Bangkok this weekend! And no, we’re not saying that as a side effect of the Star Wars marathon we went on to celebrate Star Wars Day (May 4) or the announcement of the Star Wars: Episode VII cast. It’s because Thailand Comic Con 2014 is taking place from today until Sunday (May 9-11) at Siam Paragon and the arch-villain and his soldiers will make an appearance there. This week, to help you embrace your inner geek (we all have one — don’t be in denial), we present what you can expect from the pop culture event along with other ways to geek out in Bangkok.

Funny queen bee

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 04/04/2014

» Bon Jakobsen is the queen of funny videos on Thai social media. Since 2010, she has operated a YouTube channel called “bononstage” (youtube.com/bononstage), which began with videos to teach foreigners Thai language she posted while living in Norway. However, what has made Bon a true YouTube star are her parodies of different characters from a hi-so to a pretty to an ab baew. Bon has just started a new show called Jaidee TV Daily (fb.com/jaideetvdaily) where she gives amusing analyses of everything topical from politics to showbiz. Keep yourself up to date while being entertained by Bon (she does a really dead-on imitation of caretaker PM Yingluck Shinawatra, BTW) during weekdays at 7pm.

G-I-Y

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 31/01/2014

» Is it just us or does yakiniku inspire both delight and dread? The delight comes from the fact that many of such places in Bangkok run on an all-you-can-eat basis so you can heartily gorge. The dread is because you're likely to come away thinking about the number of days at the gym it will take to burn off all the calories. With a new look and policy, AKA is geared towards an accessible yakiniku experience that isn't excessive. It now runs on a la carte basis only with new food items to be available from tomorrow (Feb 1). The revamped AKA goes for a modern and industrial feel sans sake casks. The conversation piece is a chart showing different cuts of beef (to help you locate where your teeth land on a cow to get your appetite going, we suppose). With a facade made of shipping containers and wallpaper featuring old bricks and barred windows, the atmosphere may make someone feel like they are eating at a port, albeit a clean one.

Beacon of Burgers

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 26/10/2012

» For people who are born and raised in Bangkok, burgers probably don't conjure images of a gourmet meal. They are more akin to a grab-and-go kind of deal; a 7-Eleven snack to wolf down when in a hurry. You might grab one at McDonald's, Burger King or Carl's Jr. after your boss makes it clear that your lunch break is one hour maximum. Maybe you have one delivered while watching a football match or TV series marathon with friends on a quiet night in.
