Army chief paranoid?

News, Postbag, Published on 28/09/2019

» Re: "Apirat says B12bn of US arms 'a necessity'", (BP, Sept 26). Every time I read the army's attempt to justify their need for more extremely violent weapons, I get the feeling that the main qualification necessary for the head of the army is that he needs to be extremely paranoid. Who does he think is going to attack us? The last attack on the army that I remember was some guy who rammed a tank with his taxi at or near the Royal Plaza. Is the army commander afraid that it will be a whole fleet of taxis next time?

More than 'som tam'

» It is indeed good news to know that the Maya Bay closure will be extended until 2021. (BP, May 9). Last year's closure resulted in ecological recovery, which is a promising sign. To be frank, I previously did not think Thais could put short-term self interest aside and cooperate for long-term benefits. It's also good news that they will implement the online e-ticketing system for transparency purposes.

Are they high?

News, Postbag, Published on 10/04/2019

» I find it amazing that while there are factories in the countries north of us producing tens of millions of methamphetamine pills everyday for years, some of which are smuggled into Thailand, the Narcotics Control Board chooses to spend its time and energy raiding some small marijuana farm in Suphan Buri where they are apparently developing the byproducts of marijuana so they can be used in a healthful way.

» Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit, leader of the Future Forward Party, in a recent interview with the Bangkok Post, is quoted as saying "The criminal charges against Khun Thaksin [were laid] under the military government … we are proposing to get him back. Reopen the cases against him, and the judge has to be neutral … he has the right to a free and fair trial."

Why do we need conscripts?

News, Postbag, Published on 03/03/2019

» Re: "Conscription call 'to make army better'", (BP, March 1). Why does the army need conscripts? Definitely not to clean for some general or in fact any superior officer. As one general said, we have remote-controlled drones which can be fitted with cameras to guard the borders. A few of the drones can cover a large area without putting any lives at risk, and can also pinpoint where the enemy is. Something for the army to think about.
