Mekong drowned in water politics

News, Editorial, Published on 10/01/2021

» The mighty Mekong River is the heart and soul of Southeast Asia. Millions of livelihoods are linked to it, especially in terms of food, energy and water security. Somyot in very hot water

Oped, Editorial, Published on 09/02/2018

» Based on his media interviews, ex-national police chief Somyot Poompunmuang’s explanation about a 300-million-baht loan he claimed he received from the owner of Victoria’s Secret Massage parlour seems pretty shameless. As the then, newly appointed national top cop, Pol Gen Somyot should have distanced himself from such an ethically dubious loan.

Africa's man-made water crisis

News, Published on 22/02/2018

» About a decade ago, at a meeting of South African mayors convened by Lindiwe Hendricks, South Africa's then-minister of water and environmental affairs, we predicted that an unprecedented water crisis would hit one of the country's main cities within 15 years, unless water-management practices were improved significantly. That prediction has now come true, with Cape Town facing a shutdown of its piped water network. The question now is whether African leaders will allow our other projection -- that, within the next 25-30 years, many more of the continent's cities will be facing similar crises -- to materialise.
