Begging for a drink

News, Postbag, Published on 27/07/2019

» There is a shortage of fresh water. It happens most years and is far from unexpected. Where is the rainmaking initiative? Maybe the government has forgotten about it in the same way that they have forgotten everyone but themselves.

The last prime minister of the United Kingdom

News, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 24/07/2019

» It has been suggested that Boris Johnson (who becomes the prime minister of the United Kingdom this week) is what you would get if Donald Trump had been educated at Eton and Oxford. Maybe, although there is a great gulf between Mr Trump's bombastic self-promotion and Mr Johnson's self-deprecating, rather shambolic persona.

Political hodgepodge

News, Postbag, Published on 08/07/2019

» Re: "The evolving Thai political fault lines", (Opinion, July 5). I must agree with everything Thitinan Pongsudhirak has pointed out. This military-led conservative coalition distrusts open politics and a fair, democratic game of elections, constitutions, and political parties and civil society.

Corruption endemic

News, Postbag, Published on 08/06/2019

» In my 30-plus years in Thailand, it has become quite obvious that corruption in its various forms has had a disastrous effect on the country through the failure of its institutions. Look up the effect of corruption on Google and immediately you will find that politicians, police and the judiciary are the institutions named as most affected. I have watched with disbelief as politicians, wealthy individuals and military leaders have broken laws, engaged in illegal activities and even caused deaths without any repercussions for their actions.
