LIFE

I <3 Bangkok

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 09/03/2018

» Ah, Bangkok -- the city where road laws are more like suggestions than laws, where the traffic is horrible, the air is polluted, where that Rolex you bought stops working the next day and where a "ping pong show" isn't a game of table tennis. There are many weird and sometimes downright horrifying things we experience living in Bangkok, like being stuck in a taxi with a perverted driver. But despite the many, many things we complain about, Bloomberg's Misery Index (which is a thing, you can Google it) has named Thailand "the least miserable country". In light of that, we've compiled a few reasons why we love living in Bangkok (we are aware we're focusing on Bangkok and not Thailand. We see you rushing to troll us, haters) to remind you to look at the brighter side and forget the fact that the elections are postponed again... Oops.

» Eat, play and love -- they're the three most significant elements in the development of a child during those first six years. So to raise public awareness regarding the importance of this, and to send the message to parents, Unicef along with Central Group recently launched a campaign entitled #EatPlayLove to promote children's brain development.

A future for elephants

Life, Arusa Pisuthipan, Published on 07/03/2018

» An elephant eats 8% of its body weight per day. If it weighs 3 tonnes, it eats 240kg of plants daily. Food for an elephant costs around 40,000 baht per month, which means a daily spending of over 1,000 baht, and we are not even talking about fancy food here.

Ready to kill

Life, Lary Wallace, Published on 06/03/2018

» Doug Stanhope is a comedian who once sat on an entire hunk of material while waiting for the pertinent statute of limitations to pass. And once you know that, you're on the road to knowing everything you need to about this singularly crude and coarse stand-up, soon making a stop in Bangkok on his first Asian tour. He's playing the Magners International Comedy Festival on March 17, at the Westin Grande Sukhumvit, and you just know he's going to charge the ballroom-size venue with a sense of ever-potential danger -- the thrilling knowledge that the very next syllable might transgress some sacrosanct threshold of taste and tact.

Out of Africa

Life, Published on 05/03/2018

» Like other foreign nationals, Africans come to Bangkok to study, work or find opportunities. But racial prejudice and social perception sometimes mean black people, while often finding Thailand a friendly place to live, are treated with bias and suspicion. Here we talk to three young Africans on everything from the popularity of Black Panther, to casual racism and overcoming cultural differences.
